International Accounting Manager

The International Accounting Manager oversees all accounting and financial functions for various international exploration and development assets including but not limited to Côte d'Ivoire, Morocco, Cameroon, Mexico, and Brazil. This leadership role willhave three direct reports across various experience levels and is the primary accounting and finance liaison with the country managers, asset teams, exploration, drilling, business development and commercial, corporate functions, and external partners. This role will report to the Director, Operations Accounting with frequent direct interaction with the Vice President and Controller.

This leader is responsible for establishing end-to-end accounting processes across the exploration, appraisal, and early development lifecycle, establishing relationships and partnerships both internal and external, and providing strategy and guidance to ensure strict adherence to local accounting, reporting, compliance and regulations that governs both US and the various host country accounting standards.

This role will be based in our Houston Corporate office, have flexibility to participate in early morning or evening calls with international stakeholders, and travel internationally as required (estimated up to 20% of the time). The position may work up to two (2) days a week remotely, as business needs allow.

Responsibilities

Leadership and Business Partnering

  • Provides leadership, training, development, and oversight of the international accounting team and establishment of local reporting team within each host country as required
  • Serve as primary accounting business partner to asset managers, and exploration and development leadership for international assets including but not limited to Côte d'Ivoire, Morocco, Cameroon, Mexico, and Brazil
  • Build strong cross-functional relationships with asset teams, drilling, exploration, commercial, legal, tax, accounts payable, treasury, in-country teams, and external parties (government authorities, tax entities, service providers, etc.)
  • Source and steward all third-party accounting and finance partnerships as required within each host country
  • Participate and be familiar with annual budget, work program & budget (WP&B), and monthly forecast processes
  • Exude an "one Murphy" culture between headquarters and in-country accounting teams ensuring alignment of standard policies, practices, and procedures

Accounting, Reporting, and Compliance

  • Oversee accurate and timely accounting for exploration and development expenditures in accordance with US GAAP (and IFRS where relevant) and company policies and cash reporting requirements within each host country
  • Coordinate monthly and quarterly close activities for assigned assets; prepare management reporting and analysis for senior leadership.
  • Monitor actuals vs budget and forecast; explain variances and recommend corrective actions
  • Ensure compliance with local statutory and tax, working closely with local reporting teams and external partners
  • Steward all accounting requirements and cost recovery accuracy per Production Sharing Contracts (PSCs) and billing and reporting requirements per Joint Operating Agreements (JOAs)
  • Prepare finance materials for operating committee and management committee meetings as required
  • Responsible for all partner audits, government and tax authority audits, and financial audits related to JOA and PSC environments
  • Support quarterly and annual external reporting requirements related to international activities (MD&A, segment disclosures, host country fiscal reporting, etc.)
  • Establishment and adherence to all internal controls, SOX requirements, and company accounting policies and procedures
  • Advocate of U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) and Anti-Bribery laws
Qualifications/Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Supply Chain, or other relevant discipline
  • Minimum 15 years' relevant industry experience with minimum 5 years of leadership experience direct/ indirect
  • Exceptional at relationship-building and overall business acumen
  • Clear and effective communicator, both written and verbal, with ability to present complex topics to non-financial stakeholders
  • Ability to work effectively across cultures and time zones; willingness to collaborate with in-country teams and partners and travel internationally as required (estimated up to 20% of the time)
Desired/Preferred Qualifications
  • Excellent understanding of international production sharing contracts (PSCs)
  • Strong decision-making ability in fast paced or unclear environments
  • High level of integrity, sound judgment, and commitment to ethical business practices
  • Multilingual in various languages preferred: French, Spanish and/or Portuguese

The individual is required to follow all applicable safety precautions. Work is performed almost entirely in a controlled (i.e., inside) environment and does not typically subject the incumbent to any hazardous/extreme elements; some positions may require regularly moving or transporting items weighing up to 25 lbs. around the office for various needs.
