Surgical Technologists play a vital role in this team, assisting with cutting-edge cardiovascular operations while collaborating with esteemed surgeons, perfusionists, anesthesia specialists, and perioperative personnel in a highly specialized setting.

Since the year 2000, our facility has led New England in adult heart transplants, achieving a remarkable total of 657 transplants. In 2024, we set a new regional benchmark by completing 70 adult heart transplants, exceeding the previous year's record of 61.

Job Profile Overview

This position is centered on providing medical and clinical support services to patients. Responsibilities include performing various Surgical Services tasks, such as assisting with procedures involving incisions or excisions, and ensuring a safe environment for patients undergoing invasive surgeries. This role requires specialized knowledge or skills acquired through vocational education, training, and experience, and is typically suited for entry-level candidates with minimal prior experience.

Position Summary

This entry-level Surgical Technician role involves working under the supervision of the surgical team in the Operating Room to provide patient care throughout the perioperative process. You will assist the Surgeon during procedures by supplying the necessary instruments and maintaining an organized operating room environment. Adherence to departmental and hospital policies, procedures, and objectives is essential, as is collaboration with other services to ensure quality healthcare delivery.

Job Responsibilities

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Prior employment as a surgical technologist in a surgical facility before July 1, 2013; OR completion of a military surgical technology training program; OR graduation from an accredited Surgical Tech Program.
  • 0 to less than 12 months of healthcare experience.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
  • New graduates from an accredited Surgical Tech Program must obtain credentialing within 12 months of graduation.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Function professionally as a Surgical Technologist in various surgical procedures.
  • Maintain strict aseptic techniques during setup, patient draping, and throughout surgical procedures.
  • Scrub in on surgical cases, assist the surgeon by organizing instruments, and participate in surgical counts.
  • Select and prepare appropriate instruments, supplies, and equipment for surgical cases.
  • Perform related activities under the surgeon's direction.
  • Conduct all counts with the circulating nurse in accordance with Operating Room policy.
  • Manage intraoperative medications as per Operating Room policy.
  • Handle surgical specimens according to physician orders and hospital policy.
  • Follow Operating Room procedures for decontaminating instruments, equipment, and room turnover.
  • Assist with patient positioning, moving, and transporting as necessary.
  • Report equipment and supply issues to the Charge Nurse, Service Lead, or Clinical Nursing Director as needed.
  • When not involved in surgical cases, assist with positioning and obtaining necessary items during surgery, and help with room turnover activities.
  • Engage in Operating Room activities related to quality improvement, continuing education, orientation of new staff, and emergency preparedness.
  • Stay informed about service-specific equipment to ensure safe and efficient use.
  • Foster a collaborative work environment with peers and colleagues.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work in semi-restricted and restricted areas of the Operating Room and other perioperative support zones.
  • Stand under hot surgical lights for extended periods.
  • Potential for muscle strain from lifting patients and heavy equipment, as well as risks of shocks and burns from cautery units and autoclaves.
  • Frequent exposure to hazardous chemicals, blood, bodily fluids, high noise levels, radiation, lasers, and temperature fluctuations.
  • Ability to wear a protective lead apron for long durations and exposure to harmful gases and infections.
  • Requires frequent lifting and positioning of patients, materials, and equipment.
  • Regular interaction with patients, physicians, and nursing staff in the Operating Room.

Skills & Abilities:

  • In-depth knowledge of aseptic techniques and infection control practices.
  • Basic understanding of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, microbiology, and pharmacology to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Familiarity with computers, surgical equipment, and infrastructure.
  • Basic skills necessary to provide care to patients across various life stages.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective communication with staff, patients, physicians, vendors, and other departments.
  • Demonstrates essential knowledge in all procedures related to their surgical specialty and possesses sufficient general knowledge to assist in other specialties as needed.
