This is an open examination. To be eligible under this position all applicants must be a high school graduate or possess a G.E.D., must possess a valid commercial drivers license Class A with Tank Endorsement, must be a U.S. Citizen or have a permanent resident card and be at least 18 years of age.

Job Description

General statement of duties:

Operates trucks and other light-heavy, mechanical construction equipment. Performs manual labor as necessary; and all work as designated by a supervisor.

Distinguishing features of the class:

Can operate all vehicles and equipment as specified for a Utility Operator 2/Semiskilled Laborer, plus: roller, sweeper, tandem, flusher and loader.

Examples of work:

Drives trucks for all variety of construction, clean up, and other City maintenance operations; handles and moves materials for storage, maintenance or construction. Is involved in the installation, maintenance and repair of city facilities and infrastructure. Any duties of a Utility Operator 2/Semiskilled Laborer. May direct a crew to which they are assigned unless a supervisor is present. Other related duties, not listed, but consistent with, and similar in nature to, the above examples may also be required.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

A knowledge of all types of public works construction, maintenance, and repair work. A full knowledge of the city streets is necessary. Ability to follow oral and written instructions; must be in good physical condition and maintain a good attendance record; must be able to deal tactfully with the public when the need arises; must be able to drive a truck and operate various light to heavy equipment; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments when needed. Must possess a valid Class A Commercial Drivers License, with the Tank Endorsement, at all times.

Acceptable experience and training:

Training within the City or experience with a private contractor, or other combination of knowledge, training, and experience which provides the necessary skills is acceptable. Must be a thoroughly experienced truck driver with a good background in construction equipment.

Testing Information

SUBSEQUENT TO THE FILING OF THE APPLICATION, THE CANDIDATES WILL BE NOTIFIED OF THE LOCATION, DATE, AND TIME OF THE EXAMINATION.

An examination will be administered covering the following areas: Map reading, math, mechanical knowledge, general labor, public relations, construction, maintenance/repair, vehicle operation/safety, and other related subjects. A 70% passing point will be used.

REPEATING AN EXAM

Per OAC Rule 123: 1-9-01, an applicant who has competed in a civil service examination cannot repeat that examination or take an examination for the same classification within FOUR MONTHS from the date of original examination, unless an alternative form of examination is given, or unless other standards are specified in the examination announcement.

RATING

Your name will be placed on a list of eligible candidates upon receiving a passing score. Once the list has been established, your name will remain on the list for a period of one (1) year.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO VETERANS
