General Summary
Under general supervision from the Canine Care Center Supervisor or designee is responsible for the care, feeding and handling of dogs.
Minimum Qualifications
High school graduate or equivalent OR any equivalent combination of experience, education, training and/or certification as determined by the employer.
Knowledge Skills & Abilities
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers and fractions
- Ability to read and understand written instruction and/or directions
- Ability to follow verbal directions
- Ability to work independently and effectively with supervisors, co-workers and volunteers
- Abillity to effectively communicate with patrons, volunteers, and staff
- Ability to use animal handling equipment within a shelter environment, incuding specialized handling of dangerous dogs
- Ability to control and move dogs weighing up to 150 pounds
- Must be able to regularly lift and carry up to 50 pounds and perform physicially demanding tasks daily
- Must be able to occasionally lift up to 75 pounds
- Must be able to occasionally lift up to 150 pounds with assitance
- Must be able to walk, stand for long periods of time, bend, squat, and reach
- Ability to demonstrate physical fitness; demonstrate agility (to move whole body quickly and easily); demonstrate dexterity (to use hands and/or feet skillfully
- Must be able to distinguish between shades of color
- Knowledgeable of dog behavior and breeds*

Unusual Working Conditions
- Some overtime required
- Exposure to varied and unusual odors, loud noises and chemicals
- Exposure to challenging or difficult customer situations
- Exposure to wet, dry, humid environment
- Work requires restraining, lifting and carrying dog cages and equipment
- Exposure to insect pests such as fleas and ticks
- Possibility of being bitten or scratched
Essential Job Functions
- Feed, water, walk and provide general care for dogs
- Bathe dogs
- Clean assigned kennel areas to provide a sanitary and disease-free environment
- Assist in the euthanasia of dogs
- Assist in the medical care and intake of dogs, as needed
- Assist citizens in identifying their impounded dogs
- Assist citizens in meeting adoptable dogs and doing dog-dog introductions as needed
- Perform custodial duties in restrooms, offices and other non-kennel areas
- Maintain equipment and grounds
- Launder and provide clean dog bedding
- Attend off-site adoption events
- Assist with SAFER evaluations once trained
- Update computerized kennel records as needed
- Additional duties as assigned
