Job Description

This position is responsible for planning, directing, and managing the accounting and contracting functions of Lake Superior College. This includes developing and recommending policies and procedures in compliance with System Board policy and/or State Statute, which are approved by the President’s Cabinet. Incumbent is responsible for applying these policies in directing the daily business operations of the college and supervises employees engaged in varied and diverse functions. This includes, but is not limited to, financial reporting, accounting activities, cash flow management, audit activities, payroll, grant management, purchasing, accounts payable, inventory, and fixed asset reporting. This position is responsible for developing an adequate internal control structure and complying with state and federal laws and regulations as well as Minnesota State Colleges and Universities policies and procedures. The person in this position is responsible for negotiation of complex leases and contracts and provides form and execution approval on contracts for the college. All non-personnel insurance policies are handled by this person in conjunction with the State Risk Management department.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 1 year professional or 3 years of technical/administration experience or equivalent experience in these areas; Professional knowledge and understanding of accounting principles and standards, including GAAP and fund accounting
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with persons from diverse backgrounds, and commitment to diversity and inclusion initiatives and promoting an attitude of teamwork
  • Experience as a supervisor, team lead, lead worker, or project lead directing a diverse team.
  • Critical thinking skills sufficient to analyze and interpret accounting and procurement processes
  • Strong verbal and written skills sufficient to write, prepare, and edit memos, procedures, reports, presentations, and to clearly explain, discuss, communicate, and present technical ideas and procedures to staff at all levels of the organization
  • Computer skills including spreadsheets, word processing and databases
  • Ability to set priorities and handle multiple tasks with timelines; ability to delegate as appropriate

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or closely related field plus 3 years of professional experience or equivalent experience in these areas, and/or MBA or CPA
  • Experience supervising in a union environment
  • Experience as a supervisor, team lead, lead worker, or project lead directing a diverse team
  • Two years professional level experience with administering contracts or service agreements
  • Experience with and understanding of Minnesota State Government and MinnState business and academic software systems, i.e., State of Minnestoa and MinnState computer applicationsand their interrelationships
  • Ability to create queries and generate ad-hoc reports

Work Shift: Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm

Telework: Yes, hybrid eligible for telework after successful completion of probationary period.
