Examples of Duties

As an integral member of the Business Applications Unit, the Senior Business Intelligence Report Writer/Developer is responsible for the analysis, design, implementation, testing, and maintenance of complex operational and analytical reports, along with dashboards and other data visualizations. This role requires a leader in data-driven design concepts, requirements gathering, documentation, quality control, and data analysis/visualization techniques.

  • Develop an in-depth understanding of underlying data sources, data structures, and business use cases to ensure reports meet organizational and client needs.
  • Participate and lead in business analysis activities to gather required reporting, analytic, and dashboard requirements.
  • Translate business requirements into specifications used to create reports, dashboards, and analysis services.
  • Develop technical documentation for reports, including data sources, logic, processes, and limitations.
  • Work with developers, DBA's, and analysts to review requirements and application changes that will impact reports.
  • Create complex reports using tools such as SSRS, Power BI, and Business Objects for internal and external users.
  • Provide technical support and assistance as required to ensure the availability and performance of developed reports and dashboards, for both internal and external users.
  • Lead teams in the conversion of legacy reports (Crystal Reports, etc.) to SSRS and Power BI reports and dashboards.
  • Support end-user community in the use of business intelligence tools to query databases and files for adhoc reports.
  • Design and develop technical standards and quality control processes to ensure timely and accurate delivery of reports.
  • Develop and ensure proper configuration and change management processes are in place for the enterprise reporting environment.
  • Provide technical assistance and cross-training to team members.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in Business, Computer Science, Data Science, or a similar field.

PLUS

Three years of progressive experience in the analysis, design, development, documentation, and implementation of business intelligence solutions in a large organization, linking multiple disparate data sources to produce complex operational and analytical reports, dashboards, and data visualizations.

(Additional experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two years for the required education.)

Character Requirements

EXAMINATION PROCEDURE

Conditions of Employment

Persons appointed to this position may work on either a rotating or fixed shift basis, which will include nights, weekends, holidays, or overtime when scheduled. Some positions in this classification may be designated as Emergency/Essential personnel and may be required to work overtime with little or no notice.

Physical and Environmental Conditions

The work of these positions is essentially sedentary but may entail occasional walking, lifting, or other limited physical activities.

Health Insurance

Retirement

Employees are required to participate in the Baltimore County Employees Retirement System, with very limited exceptions.

Paid Leave

Sick Leave - Monthly sick leave earnings prorated based on the number of hours worked per week. No maximum on accrual. Accrued balance can be applied toward service credit at retirement.

Vacation Leave - Monthly vacation leave earnings prorated based on the number of hours worked per week. Earnings increase after five, ten and fifteen years of service generally.

Holidays - Part-time 30 to 39 hour non-merit or non-classified employees will generally be paid for ten holidays per calendar year. Other part-time, non-merit or non-classified employees working 29 hours per week or less will receive two paid holidays per calendar year. These holidays are the Christmas holiday and the Independence Day holiday.
