POSITION TITLE School Bus Driver

REPORTS TO Transportation Coordinator

NATURE OF WORK

Transport students safely and efficiently to and from school according to a specified route and time schedule. Provide a safe and orderly atmosphere while adhering to all safety regulations.

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT 10 Months

SALARY Grade 51B - Minimum 17.47 Hour

FLSA Status Non-Exempt

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or GED required

Must have at least six months of driving experience as a licensed motor vehicle operator

REQUIREMENTS

Must be at least 18 years of age

Must possess a valid NC Drivers License and a good driving record

Must submit to a preemployment background check

Must submit to preemployment as well as random and post-accident drug testing

Must possess good moral character

Must maintain a professional appearance at all times

Must attend and successfully complete classroom virtual and behind the wheel training conducted by DMV personnel

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to obtain an NCDOT medical card paid for by OCS

Must have acceptable vision

Must have acceptable hearing

Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds

Must be able to stand, walk, run, bend, stoop, push, pull, reach, climb, and sit for extended periods of time

Must be able to enter and exit the bus in a forward-facing movement

Must be able to exit the bus through the rear emergency door

Must be able to communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff

Must be able to perform routine cleaning tasks

Must be able to complete and update required paperwork in a timely manner

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Transport students to and from school from stops along established routes

Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, employees, equipment, and property

Obey all federal, state, and local laws

Adhere to all provisions of the Pupil Transportation Regulations of Board of Education and all terms of the School Bus Driver Handbook

Maintain knowledge of assigned routes and students assigned to bus

Supervise students and maintain discipline on the bus

Ensure students stay in seats while bus is in operation

Perform daily pre-trip and post-trip safety inspections and report all damage and/or malfunctions to supervisor immediately

Clean and sanitize interior of the bus regularly

Clean exterior of bus, including windows and light lenses

Report all traffic violations and accidents promptly

Report all injuries, illness, and discipline problems to the appropriate immediately or as soon as reasonably possible

Ensure that no student is left alone on bus without adult supervision at any time

Ensure all students have departed bus at the end of every route

Instruct students in rider safety annually and practice emergency exit drills at least twice annually

Prevent any object from being placed in the bus that would restrict passageways or emergency exits

Keep all items on the bus secured

Drive defensively under varying traffic conditions and inclement weather

Report personal absences in time for the supervisor to secure a substitute driver

Attend all required in-service training

Record mileage, maintain records, and complete reports fully and accurately

Exercise good judgment in appraising situations

Exercise tact and courtesy in contact with parents, guardians, students, and all staff

Model non-discriminatory practices in all activities

Operate a two-way radio as a means of communication to supervisor and/or transportation department only

Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor
