Description
The Building Technician ensures school facilities remain sanitary, safe, and comfortable for students, staff, and visitors. This role performs skilled and semi-skilled maintenance work necessary for the safe and efficient operation of HVAC units and related building systems. The technician completes assignments properly and in a timely manner while supporting overall facility upkeep.
Qualifications
Education: Targeted job-related education that meets organization s prerequisite requirements.
Certificates & Licenses: HVAC Certification is nice to have. A valid Operating Engineer s license (such as NIULPE, Maryland, or DC) is preferred but not required.
Experience: 2 4 years of experience with the operation, maintenance, and repair of commercial HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems.
Essential Functions
- Attends meetings, workshops, and training sessions as required.
- Communicates daily with school leadership and supervisors regarding planned work.
- Coordinates with staff on special events, meetings, and facility needs to ensure spaces are available and properly prepared.
- Informs school personnel and supervisors of work order status and any safety-related matters.
- Performs daily inspections of facilities to ensure they are safe, clean, and well-maintained; identifies repairs needed due to vandalism, breakage, or weather.
- Maintains required documentation including inspections, maintenance logs, and repair records.
- Operates and monitors commercial HVAC systems, zoned units, and auxiliary equipment to maintain proper climate control.
- Uses the Building Automation System (BAS) to verify spaces are at correct temperature set points and makes adjustments as needed.
- Prepares facilities for daily operations (opening access points, minor repairs, etc.).
- Performs routine and preventive maintenance on heating and air conditioning equipment, including checking fluid levels, belts, pulleys, greasing motors, replacing filters, and cleaning equipment.
- Conducts basic repairs to building systems and components (boilers, locks, doors, electrical fixtures, etc.) and submits work orders when more extensive repairs are needed.
- Recommends equipment, products, or process improvements to support efficient operations and regulatory compliance.
- Performs related duties as assigned to support a safe and functional learning environment.
