Description San Bernardino County is recruiting for Building Plant Operators who are responsible for monitoring and operating a steam boiler and chiller plant, and specialize in maintenance and repair functions, acting as a lead worker over contractors and other personnel on specific jobs. Building Plant Operators are responsible for the mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic systems, auxiliary equipment and computerized systems, as well as implementing corrective actions to maintain/restore proper function of the system.

The current vacancy exists with Project and Facilities Management. The resulting list may be used to fill vacancies as they occur throughout the County.

Summary Employee Benefits County MOU - General Unit

Conditions of Employment Pre-Employment Process: Applicants must pass a background check, including fingerprinting, pre-employment physical/drug test, and verification of employment history prior to appointment.

Physical: This position requires frequent walking and standing; continuous lifting of items weighing up to ten (10) pounds and occasionally up to sixty (60) pounds.

Environment: Incumbents work in small or limited spaces; exposure to electricity, chemicals, and infectious areas; exposure to atmospheric pressure, fire, heat, oil and odors; and the use of specialized protective equipment or clothing.

Travel: Travel throughout the county may be required. Employees will be required to make provision for transportation. At the time of hire, a valid California Class C driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be produced and maintained for the individual providing transportation.

Availability: The County has facilities which operate 24/7; work schedule will vary to ensure coverage. The incumbent may occasionally be required to work overtime.

Certification: Must obtain EPA 608 Universal Certification within six (6) months of hire.

Minimum Requirements Experience: Two (2) years of journey-level experience operating and maintaining boilers AND chillers, including related auxiliary equipment for building systems.

Desired Qualifications The ideal candidate will possess the LA City Steam License, or equivalent Steam Engineer license, or have experience working with a variety of building management/automated systems (BMS/BAS). Additionally, the ideal candidate will possess experience overhauling and cleaning boilers, monitoring chillers, pipe fitting, and repairing pneumatic and electrical/electronic control devices.
