Purpose of Announcement

EXAMINATION IS ANNOUNCED TO SUPPLEMENT THE EXISTING EMPLOYMENT LIST TO FILL ONE (1) CURRENT EAST JEFFERSON VACANCY IN THE DEPARTMENT OF GENERAL SERVICES.

This employment list will also be used for future EAST AND WEST Jefferson vacancies in various Departments as they occur.

Kind of Work

The purpose of this position is to supervise skilled and semi-skilled employees engaged in the maintenance and upkeep of various buildings under the jurisdiction of the Department of General Services. Employees in this classification performs routine carpentry and maintenance work, reviews work tickets, orders materials for projects, and supervises maintenance and carpentry projects. This position performs supervisory activities in managing assigned staff which involves scheduling, instructing, assigning, reviewing work, maintaining standards through the effective coordination of activities, maintaining records on all shop and hand held power tools, and handling of related personnel situations. Employee plans, assigns, and supervises all phases of building maintenance activities. Supervises and participates in carpentry design and repair projects to ensure that all work is done as assigned and performed properly. Estimates the cost of supplies and ensures crews have the materials and supplies needed to complete assigned projects. Provides recommendations for major repairs. Performs related work as required. This position is an essential, emergency duty status worker and may not be relieved of duty when the Parish President or their designee recommends a voluntary or mandatory evacuation of Jefferson Parish. Position requires driving of a Parish vehicle; thus, possession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record will be given preference.

Minimum Qualifications For Admission to Examination

Current employment and permanent civil service status with Jefferson Parish; PLUS, six (6) months of paid work experience in the construction, maintenance, alteration, or repair of buildings indicating the knowledge and related skills needed to supervise the upkeep of various parish facilities.

OR

Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent certificate; PLUS, one (1) year of paid work experience in the construction, maintenance, alteration, or repair of buildings to include at least six (6) months of this experience in a supervisory capacity.

Vacation (Annual Leave)

Employees accumulate one half day of paid vacation for every two weeks worked.

Leave accrual rates increase with years of service. Any unused annual leave is

usually paid upon separation from Parish Employment.

Sick Leave

Employees accumulate one half day of paid sick leave for every two weeks worked.

Sick leave is available for personal illness, injury or medical consultations.

Holidays

Nine paid official holidays are observed, plus any holidays declared by Parish Officials.

Life Insurance

All regular employees receive a life insurance policy equal to one years salary.

Extra insurance may be purchased.

Medical Insurance

An HMO medical insurance plan is avalable for employees and their

dependents. Jefferson Parish pays 80% of the premium for employees and 50% of

the premiums for dependents.

A Flexible Benefits Plan

Employees have the opportunity to save money by paying for health

insurance and optional insurance with pre-tax dollars. A Flexible Savings

Account for Medical Expenses and Dependent Care is also available.

Retirement

Most regular employees belong to the Parochial Employees Retirement

System instead of the Social Security System. For employees hired after

January 01, 2007, a pension calculated at 3% of salary per year of service

is provided upon retirement at age 67 with 7 years of service, age 62 with

10 years of service, or age 55 with 30 years of service.

Tenure Payment

Employees are paid $25 per year of service in December of each year.

Employees must have worked two years before the first check is paid.

Deferred Compensation Plan(457b plan)

Similar to 401K programs, the 457b Deferred Plan allows employees to defer

up to $14,000 of pretax income each year to supplement retirement savings.

Pre-tax contributions can be cashed in upon retirement or termination without

penalty. This plan is provided by Nationwide Retirement Solutions 1-877-677-3678.
