The City of Laramie is accepting applications for a Building Inspector I, II, or III. This position is responsible for performing field inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial construction projects to ensure compliance with applicable building codes, zoning regulations, and safety standards. This role involves reviewing plans, issuing permits, and providing technical guidance to contractors, property owners, and the public to promote safe and lawful development within the community.

Ideal Candidate

Inspect buildings during various stages of construction, including new builds, alterations, repairs, and remodeling, to ensure compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations. Check plans for code compliance, special conditions, or requirements.

Inspect existing buildings for change of use, occupancy, or compliance with applicable building codes and zoning ordinances.

Perform plan review and interpret construction plans, blueprints, and specifications for accuracy and compliance prior to permit issuance.

Identify code, permit, and licensing violations, obtain and prepare evidence, issue notices to comply with violations, and follow upon correction notices to ensure required corrections have been performed.

Work alongside the Permit Tech to approve the issuance of building and occupancy permits, compute permit fees, issue permits.

Confer with architects, contractors, builders, and the public in the field and office, explain and interpret requirements and restrictions.

Confer with appropriate regulatory officials and supervisors on difficult inspections or where interpretations are required.

Maintain files and reports regarding inspection activities and findings.

Attend and participate in professional group meetings and training, stay abreast of new trends, developments, and regulations in the fields of plan examining, building inspection, and construction.

Experience with or ability to learn the Tyler Permitting Software for management and review of all plans and permits. Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Building Official.

Qualifications

A combination of the following experience and training would be qualifying:

  • Equivalent high school or GED.
  • Experience as a skilled craftsperson or inspector in one or more of the building trades, including structural, electrical, gas, mechanical, plumbing, and fire prevention.
  • One full year of academic training in a recognized Building Inspection Training trade school specializing in instruction of the International Codes.
  • A special trade school certificate or special training in Building Public Works, electrical, gas, mechanical, plumbing, or fire prevention inspection is an acceptable equivalent to skilled craft experience.
  • Must have a valid drivers license or be able to obtain one.
  • Ability to work in a standard office environment, exposure to outdoors, and ability to travel to different sites and locations.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of building construction methods, materials, and codes.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and technical specifications.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Proficiency in inspection management software and standard office applications.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and maintain professionalism under pressure.

Working Conditions

Work is performed both in an office environment and outdoors at construction sites. Exposure to noise, dust, varying weather conditions, and potential hazards of construction sites. Must be able to walk, climb, bend, and lift up to 25-50 pounds.

Salary Range

Salary Range rates are hourly and will be dependent upon experience and qualifications.

  • Building Inspector I: $26.74 - $35.28 per hour.
  • Building Inspector II: $29.48 - $38.90 per hour.
  • Building Inspector III: $32.50 - $42.89 per hour.
