Description

Are you looking for an opportunity where you can perform skilled technical work while overseeing a comprehensive preventive and corrective maintenance program for mechanical and building equipment? If so, the Building & Equipment Coordinator position with the City of Harrisonburg Public Utilities Department may be the right career move for you!

The Building & Equipment Coordinator is a full-time position with benefits and a preferred hiring range of $24.41 - $26.85 per hour (equivalent to $50,772 - $55,848 annually); however, an exact salary will be determined based upon the selected candidates qualifications and in compliance with City policy.

As the Building & Equipment Coordinator, youll be responsible for:

  • Performing routine maintenance and repairs building-wide with apprentice-level skills in electrical, plumbing, and carpentry;
  • Leading and engaging in installation, maintenance, and repair projects, operating specialized equipment periodically;
  • Tracking, maintaining, and ordering building inventory, such as shop equipment and janitorial supplies;
  • Maintaining Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) units and changing filters on a regularly-scheduled basis;
  • Performing grounds maintenance activities, including but not limited to cutting grass, trimming trees, raking leaves, and weeding landscaped beds;
  • Assessing equipment and building maintenance needs and making recommendations for modifications, maintenance, and repairs;
  • Inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing minor mechanical defects in various equipment, including diesel, electric, and gasoline-powered vehicles, mowers, trucks, excavating equipment, and other mechanical equipment;
  • Maintaining a proactive preventive maintenance program and budget on all equipment and prioritizing repairs and maintenance based on department need;
  • Purchasing parts and replacement supplies;
  • Maintaining comprehensive records on all equipment and parts inventory, repairs made, and equipment condition;
  • Making recommendations on vehicle and equipment replacements and assisting with writing technical specifications for the procurement of vehicles and equipment;
  • Working directly with Central Garage to schedule vehicle repairs and maintenance through the departmental system;
  • Maintaining and submitting monthly fuel logs to Central Garage;
  • Overseeing the Public Utilities Shop maintenance, good housekeeping, and safety protocols;
  • Overseeing the contracting, maintenance, and replacement of gas monitoring equipment;
  • Overseeing the training of field crews on the equipment;
  • Managing various maintenance contracts, including but not limited to heavy equipment preventive maintenance, pest control, overhead door, and more for inspections and repairs;
  • Maintaining a monthly fire extinguisher checklist for department buildings and assigned vehicles/equipment, and scheduling annual fire extinguisher contracted inspections and visits;
  • Overseeing the annual Stormwater Pollution Prevention Program (SWPPP) inspections and coordinating corrections with the Department of Public Works;
  • Maintaining a safe working environment in department buildings and the shop, including maintaining manufacturers safety guards and shields on all equipment, ensuring that Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is available for all job functions, ensuring that all strobe and hazard lights are in proper working order in vehicles and equipment, and ensuring that all vehicles and equipment are in safe operating condition;
  • Operate a City vehicle in the performance of job duties;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED and considerable (3-5 years) experience in public utilities equipment, automotive, and building maintenance, repair, installation, and/or construction work. Some experience in contract management. An equivalent of education and experience may be used to meet the education and experience requirements.
  • Valid drivers license. Current possession of or the ability to a valid Virginia Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class B within six (6) months of hire date.
