The Building Electrician installs, maintains, and troubleshoots commercial and industrial electrical systems, including medium-voltage switchgear and standby generation systems up to 7.2 kV. Responsibilities include conduit installation, end-of-life equipment replacement, circuit repair, and diagnostics of electrical control systems. Primary support is provided to Harrisburg International Airport with additional support to three SARAA-managed general aviation airports.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Plan and execute electrical installations in compliance with NFPA 70, ensuring system reliability and code adherence.
Interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, and technical drawings for accurate system installation.
Measure, cut, bend, thread, and install electrical conduit; pull conductors and verify routing.
Splice and terminate conductors using approved methods and insulation techniques.
Install lighting systems, power distribution equipment, and motor circuits.
Install and maintain control devices, relays, switchgear components, and circuit protection.
Terminate and test power cabling for equipment, fixtures, and motors.
Perform continuity, insulation resistance, and load testing using test instruments.
Inspect systems to identify hazards, deficiencies, or maintenance needs.
Repair electrical equipment, components, and circuits.
Operate aerial lifts and manlifts for airfield, ramp, and roadway lighting maintenance up to 60 feet.
Maintain and upgrade building lighting systems and branch circuits.
Assist other maintenance trades and/or SARAA staff beyond the buildings team as needed.
Participate in airfield snow-removal operations and operate related equipment.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED required. Five years of electrical experience preferred. Journeyman or licensed electrician preferred. Completion of accredited trade/technical school or military training required. Must be able to complete FAA-required training.
Licenses, Certificates, and Conditions:
Valid Pennsylvania driver's license or ability to obtain within 30 days. Must pass a 10-year background and criminal investigation for Airport ID Badge.
Cognitive Skills:
Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions, exercise sound judgment, work independently, and maintain organized records. Ability to read safety rules, operating instructions, schematics, and technical manuals.
Physical Demands:
Frequent standing, walking, sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and use of hands and arms. Must occasionally lift up to 50 lbs. Requires vision across full spectrum and ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and around hazardous materials.
Work Environment:
Exposure to extreme weather, fumes, airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, elevated work areas, electrical hazards, and loud noise levels.
Language and Communication Skills:
Must read, write, and communicate effectively in English. Must communicate with managers, co-workers, FAA tower operators, contractors, and consultants using radio systems and proper terminology.
Mathematical Skills:
Ability to perform basic calculations.
Computer Skills:
Basic computer proficiency preferred.
