Reports to Foreman Superintendent Position Summary
The Broom Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of streetsweeping and broom equipment to clean road surfaces before and after paving, milling, or other construction activities. This role plays a critical part in ensuring quality paving results and maintaining safe debris-free work zones. The Broom Operator will work closely with the paving or milling crew, follow schedules, and maintain equipment in peak operating condition.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
• Operate broom sweepers equipment to clean road surfaces in preparation for paving, milling, or sealing operations. • Adjust broom angle and speed to achieve desired cleaning results based on surface and job requirements. • Perform daily pre-operational and post-operational inspections of equipment. • Clean and maintain broom equipment, including replacing worn brushes and making minor repairs. • Coordinate with foreman and crew members to ensure efficient workflow. • Monitor work areas for safety hazards and ensure a clean and debris-free environment. • Follow all safety protocols, including the use of required personal protective equipment (PPE). • Assist with traffic control flagging or other site duties when broom operation is not required. • Maintain accurate records of work performed and equipment maintenance.
Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum 1 year of experience operating broom sweepers equipment or similar construction machinery. Knowledge of broom equipment operation, adjustments, and maintenance. Ability to read and follow works schedules, job specifications, and safety instructions. Strong communications skills and ability to work as part of a team. Valid drivers license (CDL preferred but not required). Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and dust. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform tasks involving bending, kneeling, and climbing. Ability to work in high-noise environments and around moving vehicles and heavy equipment. Ability to work long or irregular hours, including nights and weekends, as required by projects schedules.
