Position Summary:

The Business Manager for the Bresnahan-Halstead Center at the University of Northern Colorado (BH Center) provides strategic and operational leadership for the Center's financial, administrative, and business functions. This position plays a critical role in supporting grants, contracts, personnel, and day-to-day operations while ensuring compliance with University, state, and federal policies. The Business Manager works closely with the Executive Director, the Director of Research and Evaluation, faculty, staff, and campus and community partners to ensure the Center's work is financially sound, well-organized, and positioned for growth.

This role requires a detail-oriented, proactive professional who can balance big-picture planning with hands-on execution in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Budget Oversight

Manage and monitor multiple funding sources, including federal and state grants, contracts, gifts, and university funds.

Develop, track, and reconcile budgets; prepare financial reports for the Executive Director and stakeholders.

Monitor expenditures to ensure allowability, accuracy, and compliance with sponsor and UNC policies.

Coordinate with UNC finance offices on purchasing, reimbursements, payroll, and financial reporting.

Event Planning

Plan, coordinate, and strategically implement plans for successful Center-sponsored events.

Determine space needs, catering, and on-site IT/AV, and initiate contracts with the venue to accommodate those needs.

Initiate and process contracts for speakers.

Establish a registration process and follow up with registrants.

Attend event(s) and respond to issues/needs as they arise.

Occasional in-state traveling

Grants & Contracts Administration

Support pre-award and post-award grant activities in collaboration with faculty, PIs, and other agencies.

Assist with budget development, justifications, and revisions for proposals.

Track grant timelines, reporting requirements, and spending projections.

Ensure compliance with federal, state, and university regulations.

Personnel & Operations Support

Oversee business processes related to hiring, onboarding, payroll, and position management for staff, graduate assistants, and hourly employees.

Coordinate with Human Resources and campus partners to ensure timely and accurate personnel actions.

Support supervision structures by maintaining clear documentation and processes.

Administrative Leadership

Serve as the primary business and operations liaison between the Center and university offices (Finance, HR, Purchasing).

Develop, refine, and document internal procedures to improve efficiency and consistency.

Support strategic planning by providing data, projections, and operational insight.

Reporting & Communication

Prepare regular financial and operational summaries for leadership.

Translate complex financial information into clear, accessible language for faculty, staff, and Board members.

Maintain organized records and documentation for audits, reporting, and internal review.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in business administration, finance, accounting, public administration, or in a related field.

Demonstrated experience managing budgets and financial processes in an organization.

Experience in event planning and the successful execution of events.

Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with diverse teams.

Experience working with different funding sources and budgets.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in educational centers, research centers, and/or grant-funded environments.

Familiarity with federal grant regulations and compliance requirements.

Experience supervising staff or coordinating complex workflows.

Proficiency with financial systems and reporting tools.
