Position Summary:

We are seeking a skilled and experienced boat captain to join our team as the Captain at the Narragansett Bay Test Facility, in Newport, RI. As the Captain, you will be responsible for the safe operation of a variety of vessels including, RHIB's, workboats, patrol boats, dive boats, and the 100' R/V Transporter in support of various range activities. You will also be responsible for all rigging operations, plus the proper maintenance and inspection of rigging equipment. This is a leadership role that will also include shoreside managerial duties to ensure the proper performance of all government contract requirements. You will play a vital role in ensuring the safety and security of the vessel, crew, equipment, and any passengers participating in test operations. Work will typically occur Monday-Friday between 0600-1700, typically for no longer than 8 hours.

All work will be conducted out of the Narragansett Bay Test Facility in Newport, RI primarily from Monday-Friday. Candidates should be local or near the location for daily commuting. Role is overtime eligible.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operate and manage vessels within the legal requirements of USCG, US Navy, and other pertinent regulatory agencies.
  • Assure that the appropriately trained crew are aboard.
  • Perform all required pre-boarding and disembarkation duties as outlined by company policy.
  • Perform all vessel underway duties as outlined by company policy.
  • Ensure the vessel has all required charts and publications for the service route.
  • Supervise and confirm proper and safe mooring of all government-owned vessels to provide the appropriate level of safeguarding of assets and equipment.
  • Participate in the process of interviewing, training, and evaluation of deck department personnel.
  • Compile, review, and maintain any / all required vessel logs, reports, and forms as required by the government and company policy.
  • Serve as Risk Manager and take corrective actions per company policy and as critical situations require.
  • Provide for the safety and appropriate training of marine and non-marine crew.
  • Maintain a strong interest in the vessels, the crew, and equipment and manage it accordingly.
  • Conduct Safety audits both as mandated by company policy and as circumstances require. Supervise the coordination of corrective action indicated as a result of safety audits.
  • Ensure that the performance and behavior of crew meet legal and professional requirements.
  • Provide discipline for infractions of policy by crewmembers.
  • Consult with the Program Manager about infractions by crew members.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Requirements & Qualifications:

  • Valid Merchant Mariners Credential (MMC)
  • Minimum 100GRT NC
  • 3 years experience rigging, deploying, and recovering large in-water equipment
  • 3 years experience opening in-water vessels of at least 100' in length
  • Valid U.S. Passport
  • Valid USCG Medical Certificate
  • Valid TWIC Card
  • Ability to pass a physical exam
  • Ability to pass a written exam
