The Biology Science Center (BSC) Lab Aide will perform routine tasks required for the ongoing operation of science labs and laboratory preparation areas including the greenhouse, with supervision. This includes checking labs and then re-stocking them with proper supplies like gloves, paper towels, soap, and refilling of carboys with water. Lab Aides will also check labs for maintenance requirements such as leaks and eye wash function.
This position will mostly consist of cleaning and organizing. This may include but is not limited to washing dirty lab dishes like beakers, test tubes and used animal dissection trays, cleaning out sinks (including of plant materials and animal tissues), cleaning out refrigerators of dissections, cleaning tables, hotplates, and lab scales, cleaning models and microscopes, weeding of plants in the greenhouse, sweeping and mopping of floors, and tidying up of general areas. The BSC lab aide may also be asked to assist BSC lab assistants with any lab set up needs, building equipment, and some office tasks including working the front desk to direct students as needed.

Minimum Education/Experience
Must be a current OCCC student enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours in the fall or spring semesters or a minimum of 3 credit hours in the summer semester.
OR
Current OCCC student with a federal work study award.

Must demonstrate positive communication and human relations skills while performing work.
Must be able to adhere to policies, procedures and guidelines to assure personal safety, the safety of other personnel and safeguard laboratory equipment.
Must have initiative to be able to perform duties without constant direct supervision.

Preferred Qualifications
Previous greenhouse experience or plant knowledge.
Must be able to work in environment with dissected animals.

Job Duties (Duties Assignment Statement)
Assist with administrative tasks during times scheduled in the Biology Science Center.
Understand, obey, and enforce all safety and health regulations applicable in a science laboratory. This will include, but not be limited to, State and Federal regulations concerning hazardous chemicals, infectious organisms, and blood borne pathogens.
Effectively interact and communicate with students, faculty and staff while performing duties.
Fulfill student and institutional needs by maintaining a flexible work schedule assigned by the Biology Science Center Supervisor.
Participate in required training.
Wash, rinse, dry and store laboratory glassware in designated storage areas. Clean dissection equipment including trays that still have animal tissue.
Perform routine housekeeping tasks to maintain laboratory, preparation, and stockroom areas in a clean and orderly condition. This includes cleaning of sinks, floors, refrigerators, equipment, and table surfaces.
Maintain assigned materials in laboratory areas such as gloves, soap, DI water, and paper towels.
Assist in the preparation and distribution of supplies and expendable materials for scheduled labs under the direction of laboratory assistants.
Assist with the preparation and disposal of laboratory media and materials under the supervision of laboratory assistants.
Assist in the maintenance of plants in the greenhouse and the cleaning of fallen plant material.
Operate laboratory equipment required for the accomplishment of the foregoing responsibilities according to established procedures.
Perform the foregoing responsibilities in accordance with established safety procedure and regulations.
Must have initiative to perform duties as directed independently with minimal supervision
