Working Title Biology Instructor Position Status Department School of Health Sciences General Summary

The in-person Biology Faculty member is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction in support of Odessa College's mission to provide accessible, student-centered education and promote student success. The instructor teaches assigned biology courses in traditional, hybrid, and online formats, utilizing engaging, evidence-based teaching practices that foster critical thinking, academic achievement, and student engagement. This will include teaching a variety of undergraduate biology courses, including specialized subjects such as Microbiology, Molecular Biology, and Genetics, while incorporating current disciplinary knowledge and instructional technologies. In addition to teaching, the faculty member recruits, advises, and mentors students, supports curriculum development and assessment, collaborates with colleagues across the College, and contributes to departmental and institutional initiatives that advance academic excellence and workforce readiness.

Specific Position Duties

  • Maintains current knowledge and professional competency in the discipline through ongoing professional development.
  • Demonstrates the flexibility and ability to teach a variety of biology courses across multiple instructional modalities, schedules, locations, and delivery methods, including traditional, hybrid, online, and CollegeNOW Academy (Dual Credit) courses serving high school students.
  • Designs and delivers appropriately rigorous coursework that promotes critical thinking, student engagement, and academic success while helping students reach their full potential.
  • Provides students with clear course expectations, including syllabi, course policies, assignment guidelines, grading criteria, and timely, constructive feedback.
  • Develops and administers assessments aligned with course learning outcomes, including a comprehensive final evaluation when appropriate.
  • Creates and maintains an inclusive, respectful, and student-centered learning environment that values diverse perspectives, encourages the free exchange of ideas, and upholds academic integrity.
  • Prepares thoroughly for all instructional activities and arrives promptly for classes, laboratories, office hours, and other assigned responsibilities.
  • Presents course content in a clear, organized, and engaging manner using effective instructional strategies and appropriate educational technology.
  • Responds promptly and professionally to student questions and concerns through office hours, email, learning management systems, and other appropriate communication methods.
  • Performs routine departmental responsibilities and administrative tasks as assigned by the Department Chair, including submitting required reports, records, and schedules in a timely manner.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with colleagues, administrators, students, local school districts, and community partners.
  • Advises and mentors students regarding degree plans, transfer pathways, career opportunities, and graduation requirements.
  • Assists with recruitment, retention, marketing, and outreach efforts to promote the Biology program and Odessa College.
  • Actively participates in departmental meetings, college committees, professional development, institutional events, and community engagement activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned in support of the mission and goals of Odessa College.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree with 18 or more graduate hours in Biology from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in the use of current and emerging technologies for instruction.
  • Ability to teach all courses in the Biology curriculum.
  • Ability to inspire, motivate, and empower students to succeed.

Preferred Qualifications Annual Salary Hiring range Work Hours College Work Hours, assignment may include evening or weekend hours.
