NEW Solutions connects experienced workers (ages 55+) with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). These experienced professionals provide administrative, technical, and professional support to the U.S. Geological Survey U.S. Geological Survey through the Experienced Services Program (ESP).

Qualifications:

Minimum of 20 year(s) of experience in population ecology, invasive species management, and decision science. OR PhD Degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences. OR Previously completed training in Previously training in fisheries population, landscape factors, and fish reproduction

  • Experience required with Windows, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Teams
Duties:

Provides comprehensive professional and logistical support to the Fisheries and Invasive Species Branch to ensure efficient research operations and data integrity. The position requires collaboration with interdisciplinary teams within the Fisheries and Invasive Species Branch and may include assisting with method development, troubleshooting experimental systems, and participating in field deployments or sample collection as needed.

  • Participate in coordination of research activities across invasive species research within the USGS including the Fisheries and Invasive Species Research Team.40%
  • Plan and support controlled laboratory experiments regarding invasive species physiology and behavior; manage specimen processing and preservation.35%
  • Perform data entry, quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) of research databases, and preliminary statistical analysis.15%
  • Prepare detailed laboratory notebooks, draft technical summaries of findings, and assist in the preparation of project reports.10%

Other:
  • driving, over the water training, first aid will be provided.
  • Overnight travel: 2 time per month
  • Government Vehicle Training: Enrollee will complete defensive driving training before operating government vehicles.
  • Health and Safety Considerations: Field safety, water-safety training, use of PPE, heat/cold stress prevention, and species-handling protocols.
  • Required Safety Gear: Waders, gloves, safety glasses, PFDs, and field boots.
  • Safety Gear Use: Used during field collection, wading and working from boats
  • Physical requirements: The position requires the ability to lift up to ~40 pounds, walk or stand for extended periods, work in variable weather conditions, wade in streams or rivers, and perform repetitive laboratory tasks.
