Biological Sciences Instructional Student Research Assistant

The Department of Biological Sciences at California State University San Marcos seeks a part-time ISA for Summer 2026 Research.

Purpose of Position: To assist faculty with various professional and technical duties supporting research within the Biology Department.  This is a Research Assistant position.

Under supervision, Instructional Student Assistants in this classification perform teaching, grading or tutoring duties for the majority of work hours in a given appointment in a given academic department or equivalent administrative unit over the course of an academic term. Assignments are made by academic department or equivalent administrative unit by a specific supervisor at a CSU campus. The work may be performed on-campus or at an off-campus public agency or private non-profit organization under an agreement with a campus in the CSU system.

List of Duties

  • Assist faculty with professional and non-teaching duties
  • Responsible for safe operation and maintenance of laboratory and field equipment/supplies
  • Travel to off-campus locations to gather data in the field
  • Perform lab and/or field experiments including reporting, tabulating and analyzing data

General Minimum Qualifications of Unit 11 Position:

  • Registration in CSUSM degree Program 
  • Enrolled in Courses for Fall 2026 at CSUSM toward the completion of the degree
  • Able to make decisions about accomplishing work assignments
  • Ability to learn and perform assigned work
  • Ability to work cooperatively with faculty, staff and other students
  • Ability to accept responsibility
  • Per the California State University’s Out-of-State Employment Policy, the CSU is prohibited from hiring employees to perform CSU-related work outside California. Working in the State of California is a condition of employment.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience conducting science education research.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusivity, and/or intercultural competence with diverse groups in relation to teaching.

Anticipated Pay Rate

  • Anticipated Hiring Salary Range:17.86
