SUMMARY:

The Bibliographic Specialist is responsible for checking bibliographic data, cataloging at the paper level, performing author name checking, updating and entry, and sending and processing author correspondence. Additional tasks include cataloging collection and database expansion papers and participating in other department projects, as necessary.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

On a daily production basis:
  • Determine and confirm correct author name presentation for bibliographic entries including break author names, mark casing, and correct titles as needed based on determination of publisher intent.
  • Verification process of Second Check Cataloging and metadata created by author.
  • Search in-house dictionary of institutional addresses and assign an institution code to each author; mark paper for additional work if institutional affiliation requires addition to the dictionary.
  • Verify catalog paging, language(s), and standard terminologies, add additional information such as editors, contributors, editions, translations, bibliographies, and obituaries.
  • Research and provide information for editorial evaluation related to reprints, editions, and previous parts of papers.
  • Make decisions regarding author names, including sending and processing author correspondence, as necessary.
  • Participate in discussions, problem solving, and continuous improvement of department procedures.
  • Contribute to a collaborative and supportive work environment; attend and contribute to departmental meetings.

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Some familiarity with foreign languages is highly desirable.
  • Ability to identify and edit basic bibliographic and author information with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to use a variety of computer applications daily.
  • Strong database and web searching skills.
  • Well-developed communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently to ensure timely completion of daily production tasks and work with colleagues to ensure daily production schedules are met.
