Title: Benefits/Payroll Specialist

Reports to: Chief Financial Officer

Terms of Employment: 12 month

Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree preferred
  • Graduation from high school supplemented by college-level course work in business or accounting and 1 to 2years of experience or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Benefits/Payroll Specialist are primarily responsible for informing employees about the nature of benefits plans

and any changes that happen to the structure of those benefits; reconciling monthly benefit billings; preparing,

verifying and entering data for monthly payrolls.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Prepares and distributes benefit packets for all new hires

  2. Provides new hires with explanations of benefits and instructing them on enrollment and fulfillment procedures

  3. Enrolls employees into each carries' website and adds employee deductions into LINQ

  4. Processes life status changes

  5. Consults with employees about eligibility and other pertinent issues

  6. Facilities Open Enrollment for Pierce Group Benefits and NC State Health Plan

  7. Processes enrollments quickly and accurately

  8. Reconciles monthly deduction registers to statements from each company and submits funds

  9. Prepares check request as needed for additional payments and ensures that correct budget codes are used

  10. Processes and administers Short Term Disability/Long Term Disability and Workers Compensation

  11. Attends staff development/meetings/conferences as needed to stay informed

  12. Provides ongoing support for the HR and Finance teams

  13. Enters data for employee benefit deductions, including dental, vision, flexible spending accounts, cancer and

disability during open enrollment and for all new employees

  1. Prepares and enters data for monthly payroll payments

  2. Processes payroll deductions for tax sheltered annuities, garnishments, SECU and approved professional

organizations.

  1. Maintains employee records for voluntary benefit deductions

  2. Answers payroll questions for bus drivers

  3. Answers employees' inquiries pertaining to payroll deductions and related matters

  4. Reconciles monthly SPSF, CEF, COF and Scholarship bank statements

  5. Makes daily bank deposits

  6. Works with insurance representatives to maintain professional working relationships to insure clear and open

communication

  1. Records and verifies employee TimeKeeper changes and absences/leave requests

  2. Reviews school time and attendance for accuracy

  3. Orders supplies and materials for finance department

  4. Maintains records on liability, auto, property, student accident, workers comp policies and files related claims

  5. Serves as support to the Payroll Accountant

  6. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor

Must be able to:

  • Considerable knowledge of accounting and office practices, methods and procedures used by the School System
  • Team building participation with/in Finance and the Central Office is expected
  • General knowledge of County organization and operational policies and procedures
  • Maintain confidentiality in all aspects of job
