Position Summary

The Behavioral Specialist serves as a critical support for the Kirtland Local School District, focusing on the development and implementation of behavioral strategies to foster a positive and productive learning environment. Hired through the ESC of Northeast Ohio, the successful candidate will provide direct support to students with behavioral challenges, collaborate with educational teams, and serve as a bridge between the school and the student's family.

Key Responsibilities

Student Behavioral Management

  • Assessment: Assist in conducting Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) to identify the root causes of challenging behaviors.
  • Plan Development: Support the creation, implementation, and monitoring of individualized Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs).
  • Direct Intervention: Provide one-on-one or small-group behavioral coaching to students to teach self-regulation and social-emotional skills.
  • Crisis Response: Participate in de-escalation efforts and crisis intervention in accordance with district and state safety protocols.

Collaboration & Consultation

  • Staff Support: Partner with classroom teachers and administrators to model behavioral strategies and provide classroom management coaching.
  • Multidisciplinary Teams: Contribute data and insights during IEP (Individualized Education Program) and 504 meetings.
  • Family Engagement: Act as a primary point of contact for families regarding behavioral progress, ensuring consistency between home and school strategies.

Data & Compliance

  • Monitoring: Collect and analyze behavioral data to track the effectiveness of interventions and suggest necessary adjustments.
  • Reporting: Maintain accurate and confidential records of student progress and behavioral incidents in compliance with FERPA and district policy.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Special Education, Psychology, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), or a related field preferred.

  • Certification: * BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) certification highly preferred.

  • Candidates actively pursuing BCBA certification or holding a valid Ohio Department of Education (ODE) license (e.g., Intervention Specialist) are encouraged to apply.

  • Experience: Previous experience working with students with diverse behavioral needs in a K-12 setting.

  • Skills: Strong communication, empathy, and the ability to remain calm and professional in high-stress situations.
