TheNorthernVirginiaCriminalJusticeTrainingAcademy(NVCJTA)isseekingahighlymotivated andengagedprofessionaltoleadtheBasicTrainingProgram.TheNVCJTAprovidesbasictraining for recruitsrepresentingsixteenpoliceandsheriffagencies.
MINIMUMTRAININGANDEXPERIENCE:
A bachelor’s degree in criminaljustice,education, business administration,orcloselyrelated field; supplemented bytwelve(12)yearspreviousexperienceand/ortraininginlawenforcement, includingfive(5)yearssupervising, managing,andleadingfirstlinesupervisorypersonnel;oran equivalentcombinationofeducation,training,and experience.
REQUIREDKNOWLEDGE,SKILLS,ANDABILITIES:
- Knowledgeofthemethods,procedures,andpoliciesoftheNorthernVirginiaCriminal JusticeTrainingAcademyregardingbasicrecruittraining.
- KnowledgeofthedeliveryandadministrationofVirginiaDepartmentofCriminalJustice Services(DCJS)standardspertainingtolaw enforcementtraining.
- Knowledgeofinstructiontechniques,preferablyinapoliceacademyoracomparable setting.
- Abilitytoguide,lead,andinspiretheprofessionaldevelopmentoftheBasicTraining workforce,includingitsfirstlinesupervisorystaff.
- Abilitytodevelopand administerabudget,includingrecordsmaintenance.
- Abilitytoestablishandmaintaincooperativeandeffectiverelationshipswithmember agencypersonnel,otherAcademystaff,andVirginiaDepartmentofCriminalJustice Servicesstaff.
- Abilityto effectivelysuperviseand evaluateperformanceofstaff.
- Abilitytoexerciseanalyticaljudgmentinareasofresponsibility.
- Abilitytoidentifyissuesorsituationsastheyoccurandspecifydecisionobjectivesorassist inidentificationof alternativesolutionstoissuesorsituations.
- Abilitytoimplementdecisionsinaccordancewithprescribedpoliciesandprocedureswith aminimumoferrors.Seekexperiencedadvisementwhereappropriate,andresearchissues, situations,and alternativespriorto exercisingjudgment.
- Abilitytoplan,coordinateandutilizeinformationeffectivelyinamannertoimprove activitiesandproduction.
- Possess andpractice a comprehensive understanding of the principles effective leadership,aswellastheapplicationofsuchprinciplesto functionsundercharge.

GENERALDESCRIPTIONOFDUTIES
- Manages the Basic Training programs and classes to include course development, scheduling,presentation,andassessment;plans,directsandevaluates programactivityto achievemaximumoperationaleffectiveness.
- Prepares written reports, memos, and letters; reviews written reports submitted by subordinates;preparesBasicTrainingbudgetrequests.
- MeetswithExecutiveDirector,DeputyDirector(s),fellowNVCJTAmanagersandstaff.
- Conductsandparticipatesinstaffmeetings,andplanning/after-actionbriefings.
- Supervises,manages,and leads Basic Training supervisory staff through direct communication, briefings,andwrittencorrespondence.Counselsandcommendswhen appropriate;takesprudentdisciplinaryaction;schedulesdailyactivitiesofsubordinates; evaluatestheperformanceofsubordinates;conductsinternalinvestigations;participatesin thestaffselectionprocess forinstructorsandotheremployees.
- Reviewswrittendocumentationforstructure,clarity,accuracyof content.
- Monitorsbudgetexpenditures.
- EnforcesNVCJTArulesand regulations.
- Reviewslessonplans.
- Conductsinternalaudits,inspections,assessments,andevaluationsoftheBasicTraining programtoensurecompliance withexpectationsandmandatesoftheDepartmentof Criminal JusticeServices(DCJS),theCommissiononAccreditationforLawEnforcement Agencies(CALEA)andtheNVCJTA.
- Prepares registration letters, reviews registration forms, prepares rosters, and updates directivesandmemorandums.
- CoordinatesthegraduationactivitiesofBasicDeputyandBasicLawEnforcementSchools.
- Servesasthedirectpointofcontacttomemberagencystaffregardingpersonnelmattersand performanceof recruitsandinstructors.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
CertifiedasanInstructorbytheVirginiaDepartmentofCriminalJusticeServices. Possessionofavaliddriver’slicense. Successfulcandidatesmustpassabackgroundinvestigationandcompleteaone-yearprobationary period.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
Thestartingsalaryrangeforthepositionis$79,818 to$133,030 basedon qualifications. Positionoffersanextensivebenefitspackageincludingcomprehensivelifeandhealthinsurance, vacationandsickleaveaccrual,andretirementplans.
TheAcademytypicallyoperatesonafour-dayworkweekschedule,TuesdaythroughFriday,6:00 AM through4:30PM
