Job Description

Applicants must have high school diploma or equivalent, or automotive trade/vocational school certificate. Minimum of one (1) year experience repairing gas and/or diesel engines/transmissions, rear axles, suspension systems and other components as a journeyman automotive/truck technician. Applicants must supply adequate personal hand and air tools for general repairs, possess a valid driver's license, and must obtain a Class B commercial driver's license within 180 days of employment. Opportunities for advancement.

Pay rate is based on experience and position has progressively higher levels of responsibility with additional pay increases included.

Description of Duties

Possess mechanical aptitude, manual dexterity, and sound physical health to perform any repairs necessary on all vehicles and equipment.

Perform all basic and limited advanced troubleshooting, diagnostic, servicing, and repair of gasoline and diesel equipment for the City's vehicle fleet.

Perform routine preventive maintenance such as; lubrication, engine oil and filter changes, fuel filter changes, fan belt and hose replacement, battery charging and changing, and light replacement and alignment.

Disassemble, inspect, and replace worn or broken parts; fits and adjusts new or repaired parts to industry standards.

Must be able to perform engine overhauls, trouble-shoot and repair electrical and hydraulic systems, fuel systems, air and hydraulic brake systems, air conditioning systems, suspension systems, and diagnose and repair transmissions.

Perform road tests to locate defects in equipment operation and check on repair work before the return of equipment to active service.

Must be able to work off site to repair damaged or inoperable equipment if needed.

Perform housekeeping duties in work area and abides by all established safety standards.

Remain current in all aspects of the maintenance field by updating skills and training as needed.

Notify supervisors of potentially dangerous equipment and accomplishes corrective action.

Ability to maintain an effective working relationship with other employees, public, and City officials.

Acquire a thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

Must accept being on-call at night and on weekends for emergency repairs.

Possess ability to follow written directions to properly fill out work orders and maintain vehicle maintenance historical data on equipment.

Accomplish other related duties as assigned by supervisors.

Qualifications

Must possess an accredited high school diploma or GED certificate or automotive trade/vocational school certificate.

Recommend within one year of employment to be certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) in four (4) specialty areas.

Certification can either be in the eight (8) automotive or eight (8) medium/heavy truck specialty areas or a combination of both.

Minimum of one (1) year experience repairing gas and/or diesel engines, transmissions, rear axles, suspension systems and other components as a journeyman automotive/truck technician.

Must supply adequate personal hand and air tools for general repairs.

Must possess a valid Kentucky Class B Commercial Drivers License within probationary period.

Supplemental Information

Experience in the use of personal computers and related Microsoft Office software programs.

Considerable knowledge of the methods, tools, diagnostic equipment, and standard practices of the automotive/truck mechanical trade.

Considerable knowledge and hands-on experience of the principles of internal combustion engines.

Ability to troubleshoot automotive electrical systems and the ability to read electrical schematics.

Skill in the care and use of tools employed in vehicle repair and adjustment.

Possess the mechanical aptitude, manual dexterity, and sound physical health to perform the essential functions of this position.

Must possess the physical ability to frequently work in a crouched position or lying on mechanic's dolly beneath a motor vehicle and be subjected to dust, dirt, grease, and falling debris.

Must be able to work in high heat and humidity conditions. Must be able to maintain equipment and vehicles in cold, rain, snow and other adverse weather conditions.

Work environment has a certain degree of risk in contracting various types of infectious diseases.
