Reports To: Principal and Automotive Technology Teacher
Department: Career and Technical Education (CTE)
Position Summary
The Automotive Technology Teacher Assistant supports the certified Automotive Technology Teacher in delivering high-quality Career and Technical Education (CTE) instruction. The Teacher Assistant provides instructional reinforcement, supervises students during laboratory activities, prepares instructional materials and shop equipment, maintains a safe and organized learning environment, and assists students in developing the technical and employability skills required for success in the automotive industry.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Instructional Support
Assist the Automotive Technology Teacher with classroom and laboratory instruction.
Reinforce teacher-directed lessons through individual and small-group instruction.
Provide guidance to students as they perform automotive maintenance, diagnostic, and repair procedures.
Demonstrate the proper use of automotive tools and equipment as directed by the teacher.
Assist with the administration and scoring of student skills assessments.
Support students in developing technical competencies and workplace readiness skills.
Supervise students during classroom, laboratory, field-based, and work-based learning activities.
Shop Operations
Prepare vehicles, tools, equipment, and instructional materials for daily laboratory activities.
Maintain an organized, clean, and fully operational automotive shop.
Inspect, clean, and store tools and equipment after each instructional period.
Conduct routine inventory of tools, equipment, and consumable supplies.
Report damaged, missing, or unsafe equipment to the instructor immediately.
Assist with preventive maintenance of shop equipment and instructional vehicles.
Safety and Compliance
Enforce all school, laboratory, and OSHA safety regulations.
Ensure students use personal protective equipment (PPE) properly.
Monitor student adherence to established shop safety procedures.
Maintain safe storage of hazardous materials and compliance with Safety Data Sheet (SDS) requirements.
Report all safety concerns, accidents, and equipment malfunctions promptly.
Student Supervision
Monitor student behavior and maintain appropriate classroom management consistent with school policies.
Promote professionalism, teamwork, responsibility, and safe work habits.
Encourage student engagement, attendance, and completion of assigned work.
Provide academic and technical support to students requiring additional assistance.
Program Support
Assist with maintaining student competency records and laboratory documentation.
Support SkillsUSA activities, industry certification testing, advisory committee meetings, and program events.
Assist during open houses, recruitment events, competitions, and field trips.
Perform other duties assigned by the Principal or Automotive Technology Teacher.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required.
An associate degree in Automotive Technology or a related field is preferred.
Minimum of three (3) years of professional automotive service or repair experience.
ASE certification preferred.
Valid driver''s license.
Ability to meet all employment requirements, including fingerprint clearance and background investigation.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Working knowledge of automotive systems, diagnostics, maintenance, and repair.
Ability to safely operate automotive tools, lifts, diagnostic equipment, and shop machinery.
Knowledge of OSHA safety standards applicable to automotive repair facilities.
Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
Ability to work effectively with high school students and instructional staff.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism.
Physical Requirements
Frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, and lift up to 50 pounds.
Ability to work safely in an automotive shop environment with exposure to noise, chemicals, moving equipment, and varying temperatures.
Performance Expectations
The Automotive Technology Teacher Assistant is expected to maintain a safe, organized, and productive laboratory environment; support effective instruction; reinforce positive student behavior; model professionalism; and contribute to the successful operation of the Automotive Technology program while working under the direction of the certified Automotive Technology Teacher.
