General Statement of Duties
Forsyth Countys General Services Department has an opening for an Automotive Technician. The Automotive Technician is a hands-on entry level technician that works on a wide variety of vehicles. This position will have the ability to work on fleet vehicles, emergency vehicles, as well as specialty vehicles. Technicians perform everything ranging from PM's and tire changes to engine replacements and vehicle upfits.
This position requires participation in the on-call rotation schedule, after-hours emergency response, as well as working in inclement weather where the county offices may be closed.
Work Schedule: 8:00am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday with on-call work as needed.
Uniforms, safety shoes, and tool stipends are offered to qualified employees.
Distinguishing Features
A successful candidate should have the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
Ability to estimate time and materials needed to complete a job.
Ability to diagnose causes of defective operation and to perform minor overhauls on a variety of equipment.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
Ability to follow written direction in specialized vehicle manuals.
General understanding of the uses of a variety of repair tools and special testing equipment.
Working knowledge of the theory, care, and operation of gasoline and diesel engines.
Lifting 50-100 lbs occasionally, 25-50 lbs. frequently or up to 10-20 lbs. constantly.
Completion of a one-year technical school program in automotive repair; or graduation from high school or GED and at least one year of relevant experience.
Valid drivers license required.
Must have NC Vehicle Inspection License (or the ability to acquire within 60 days of employment).
A higher education level may be considered as a substitution for all or part of the experience requirement.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Inspects, services, and repairs a variety of vehicles.
Inspects and diagnoses the operation of gasoline and diesel automotive equipment in order to determine the need for repairs.
Performs N.C. vehicle safety inspections.
Performs preventive maintenance on vehicles as scheduled, to include oil and filter changes, air filters, tires, brakes, all fluids, and other needed repairs as found during the vehicle inspection.
Overhauls cooling and fuel systems and makes simple body repairs.
Performs related work as required.
Maintaining a specific license such as a drivers license in good standing, without a lapse or loss of a privilege to drive in compliance with North Carolina law, and in compliance with applicable DOT standards for commercial motor vehicle drivers if required to perform the duties assigned to the position.
