Description

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Serves as a mechanic for light, medium, heavy duty or industrial vehicles and equipment.

Essential Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Inspects, diagnoses, repairs, maintains, or replaces components.
  • Performs overhauls, major or minor repairs such as tune-ups, oil-changes, battery replacement, brake jobs, lubricates and services automotive, light and heavy-duty equipment, changes or repairs tires and/or tubes.
  • Makes service calls to job sites; evaluates and troubleshoots, makes adjustments or performs on-site repairs.
  • Troubleshoots and performs repairs using engine analyzers and electronic scan equipment. Interprets computer fault codes.
  • Detects faulty items, determines root cause of malfunction, and determine best repair method.
  • Takes equipment apart to inspect, repair, or modify various components and systems; reassembles equipment.
  • Cleans and examines parts for damage, using gauges and meters.
  • Utilizes welding equipment to weld broken frames or parts.
  • Tests repaired automotive or heavy-duty equipment for proper operation and safety or progressive damage.
  • Performs preventative maintenance to tractors and heavy equipment including dump trucks, backhoes, street sweepers, water trucks, graders, trash compactors, ambulances, fire trucks, etc.
  • Performs maintenance on light duty automotive.
  • Performs maintenance on small equipment such as weed eaters, concrete saws, jackhammers, generators, etc.
  • Completes repair orders and preventative maintenance checklists to insure important parts are examined.
  • Keeps track of warranty work for light duty automotive and heavy equipment.
  • Records and maintains an accurate documentation of vehicle or unit log for repairs, including unit number, parts, fluids, repair work, price, and mileage.
  • Locates and orders parts and supplies, receives or picks up parts.
  • Maintains a wide variety of inventory spare parts and supplies to minimize down time on equipment.
  • Must keep and maintain inventory log of parts and supplies on hand.
  • Performs general housekeeping of shop, storage areas and compound.
  • Wash exterior of equipment following repair.
  • Operates hand tools and power tools such as pneumatic impact wrenches and grinders, brake lathes, bench and valve grinders, welder and torches, air/hydraulic jacks and lifts, battery chargers, tire balancers and tire repair machine, filter crusher, lubrication equipment, freon recovery stations, cleaning vats, power washers, and a variety of electronic service equipment, such as a charging system analyzer and computerized scanners and diagnostic devices, and a personal computer.
  • Must ensure equipment used and surrounding area are clean and free of any potential health or safety risks.

Minimum Qualifications

This position is subject to the City of Hobbs' Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy which includes one or more of the following: pre-employment testing, post accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing and follow-up testing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

Graduation from high school or GED equivalent required.

Must have a degree in Automotive/Diesel Tech or a related field with a minimum of three years of experience in automotive maintenance, heavy duty or industrial equipment.

May substitute degree requirement with specialized training in mechanics plus five years of experience in maintenance management of automotive, heavy duty or industrial equipment and small engine repair.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

Knowledge of construction, disassembly, assembly, adjustment and maintenance of a wide variety of auto, truck, maintenance and construction equipment.

Knowledge of gas and diesel engines, drive train, brakes, suspension and steering, electrical/electrical equipment, HVAC systems, preventive maintenance, inspections, etc.

Knowledge of computers, systems, and programs used in automotive service and repair.

Basic knowledge of hydraulic circuitry, cylinders and motors.

Ability to perform and carry out an on-call schedule.

Ability to operate a variety of hand, power and pneumatic tools to repair light to heavy-duty equipment. Ability to operate a hydraulic press and drill press.

Ability to perform welding and metalworking projects on equipment.

Ability to read and comprehend schematics.

Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule.

Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.

Ability to understand, follow and transmit written and oral instructions.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all City department personnel and general public.

LICENSING AND CERTIFICATIONS

Valid state issued driver's license.

Must possess and maintain Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification or through a reputable distributorship (i.e. Cummins, CAT, etc.) or have the ability to obtain ASE Certification within 18 months in the following areas.

  1. Engine Repair

  2. Engine Performance

  3. Brakes

  4. Electrical and Electronic Systems

  5. Two additional elective fields

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the broad policy guidance and direction of the Fleet Manager.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and equipment and outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works in high, precarious places, confined spaces, and is frequently exposed to adverse weather conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to blood borne pathogens and the risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is loud.

  • The City of Hobbs will provide 80% to 90% Heath Insurance Coverage from Single to Family coverage.
  • Employees are eligible for 100% short-term disability coverage provided by the City of Hobbs.
  • Employer PERA contributions 14.8% for general, 28.775% for HPD, 30.9% for HFD.
  • CDL pay - $6,000 per year (if applicable).
  • PTO accruals start at 12 hours per month (144 hours per year) and progressively increase based on years of service to 20 hours per month (240 hours per year) at year 21.
  • Bilingual Pay - $1,500 dollar incentive per year upon completion of yearly proficiency test.
  • Education Incentive - ($1,000, $4,000, $6,000 dollars - Associates, Bachelors, Masters; degree must be relevant to position and above the current minimum requirements of the held position).
  • Longevity Pay - Begins at the completion of 10 years of service. Gradually increased.
  • Retention Incentive - $600 incentive yearly with years 1-9 of completed service
  • 13 Paid Holidays.
  • Bereavement Leave - 5 days per calendar year per personnel rules guidelines.
  • Military Leave - (120 hours per year for general, 183.75 per year for HPD, 360 hours per year for HFD).
