    Description

    Overview The Automation Technician is responsible for the installation, troubleshooting, repair, and support of Okuma CNC machines that include automation systems, and integrated manufacturing solutions. This role serves as a technical expert supporting customers, distributors, and internal teams through on site service, remote diagnostics, and technical documentation. The position combines advanced mechanical, electrical, CNC, and automation expertise with customer focused service and training. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.Essential Job Functions & ResponsibilitiesProvide on site installation, troubleshooting, and repair support for CNC machines including automation systems, and peripheral automation related equipmentDiagnose complex mechanical, electrical, control, software, and automation issuesPerform retrofits, design improvements, and system upgrades at customer sitesSupport automation systems including but not limited to robotics, material handling, and integrated cellsUse precision diagnostic and measurement tools to verify machine accuracy and performanceRemote Technical Support & EscalationProvide advanced technical support to distributors and customers via phone, CRM, and remote toolsServe as an escalation resource for issues exceeding distributor capabilityAssist in identifying root cause and corrective action for recurring or complex problemsTraining & DocumentationDevelop and deliver technical training for Okuma personnel, distributors, and end usersCreate and maintain technical documentation, service manuals, bulletins, and knowledge base articlesProduce clear technical guidance to strengthen distributor self service capabilitiesCommunication & ReportingDocument service activities through detailed trip reports and service recordsCommunicate status, findings, and recommendations to customers, distributors, and managementReview warranty claims and provide technical input as requiredGeneral ResponsibilitiesMaintain compliance with company policies, safety procedures, and OSHA requirementsParticipate in after hours or rotational support as requiredPerform additional duties and contribute to continuous improvement initiativesQualificationsExperience/Training/EducationAssociate degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electronics, Automation, or equivalent experience5 to 7+ years of experience in CNC machine tools, automation, or advanced manufacturing environmentsStrong background in:CNC controls, servo systems, PLCs, and automationMechanical systems, alignment, hydraulics, and pneumaticsOkuma product experience strongly preferredRobotics and factory automation experience preferredKnowledge/Skills/Abilities – see below for the technical and general capabilitiesTechnicalAdvanced troubleshooting of CNC machines and automation systemsProficient use of precision measuring and diagnostic equipmentAbility to read mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and CAD/CAM filesStrong understanding of machine tool theory and manufacturing processesFamiliarity with ISO, OSHA, ANSI, and robot safety standardsGeneral & CommunicationStrong analytical and problem solving skillsExcellent verbal and written communication skillsAbility to work independently or collaboratively in fast paced environmentsCustomer focused mindset with strong professional presencePhysical and Environmental ElementsPhysical DemandsAbility to lift, push, or pull up to 70 poundsAbility to stand, walk, reach, stoop, and crouch regularlyFrequent travel to customer sites with varying environmental conditionsOccasional office based workWork EnvironmentAbout 50% of the position's functions are performed in the office environment with standard equipment and moderate noise levels (examples: computers, printers, fax, copiers, light traffic, and phone)The other 50% of the position's functions are performed either at a customer site or in the Okuma warehouse/ showroom.
