Description

OverviewThe Automation & Controls Engineer, part of the RDT (Research Development and Transformation) team, visualizes and creates the Digital Factory of the future to enable Mass Customization of the Clear Aligner System. The role requires a highly motivated individual who can manage projects from conception to installation. The Engineer will work on-site in Pomona, CA five days a week, and will report directly to the Director of Automation/Controls.ResponsibilitiesCollaborate with project manager, mechanical design engineer, and software group to develop a low‑risk and robust machine design.Program all software for unique projects, including PLC, HMI/SCADA, Servo, Robotics, Vision, Laser, and other technologies.Provide improvement and sustaining engineering support for existing production lines.Use automated solutions to develop, maintain, and improve manufacturing and inspection processes and procedures.Support and perform equipment, process validations, and testing to internal procedures.Initiate equipment modifications to improve productivity and product quality.Work with outside vendors to coordinate the development of manufacturing equipment.Work closely with the maintenance department to improve machine reliability, reduce downtime, and define equipment maintenance requirements.Research and identify potential suppliers for automation control systems, components, and related services, evaluating suppliers based on quality, cost, delivery time, and reliability.Monitor inventory levels of automation control components and systems; coordinate with the inventory team to maintain optimal stock levels and avoid shortages.Maintain strong relationships with key suppliers, addressing any issues promptly to ensure smooth supply chain operations and assisting with repairing equipment and tooling.Perform process failure mode effects analyses.Create methods/processes to improve capacities with production in collaboration with operations and outside vendors.Seek opportunities to reduce procurement costs without compromising quality, implementing cost‑saving initiatives and tracking their impact on the overall budget.Work with management to establish project timelines, project justification, and budget forecasts.Demonstrate responsibility for the quality and financial aspects of the company.Pursue and participate in Envista Business System initiatives.Travel up to 10% of the time to various manufacturing sites, both domestically and internationally, to oversee process implementation and provide on‑site support.Perform any duties or tasks assigned by the Manager.QualificationsBachelor's degree in engineering or related field.3+ years of experience in automation and/or process machinery controls design.Knowledge of Industrial Robotics and/or Vision Inspection & Vision Guided motion (primarily Cognex VisionPro and InSight).Experience with automation hardware and controls software.Ability to work on‑site, 5‑days per week in Pomona, CA.Preferred SkillsProficient in the design and troubleshooting of complex machine control systems and programs.Experience in PLC controls (primarily Allen Bradley CompactLogix & ControlLogix).Knowledge of HMI (primarily Rockwell Automation FactoryTalk View SE & ME and Ignition).Experience in mainstream manufacturing technologies such as CNC's, 3‑D prototyping, thermoforming, and automation within a manufacturing environment.Experience in process/equipment validation and documentation.AbilitiesBasic project management experience, good organization, and prioritization skills.Excellent communication (technical, oral, written) and the ability to describe complex technical issues clearly.Ability to follow instructions and guidelines set forth by the Engineering Manager.Sound understanding of regulatory and compliance documentation processes, review cycles and information repositories.Strong interpersonal skills that create followership and motivate team members.Driven and motivated individual with critical thinking and analytical skills.High ethical standards and attention to reputational and compliance risks.Organized thinker capable of prioritizing tasks in real‑time and exercising judgment in a high‑paced environment.Calculational competence in units of measure, rates, ration, percent, graphs, trends, and operational/financial reports.Ability to apply common‑sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.Excellent technical judgment and ability to set logical action plans and technical problem resolution.Competent with personal computers and strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Microsoft Project;
