Job Title: Authorization Specialist – Admitting / Scheduling / Billing
Location: Ithaca, NY
Duration: 13 Weeks
Shift: Day Shift | Monday–Friday | 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM
Guaranteed Hours: 40 Hours/Week

Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Authorization Specialist to support prior authorization, scheduling, billing, and insurance verification processes within a healthcare environment. The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of medical terminology, insurance authorization workflows, and healthcare administrative operations while maintaining a high level of professionalism and patient service.
Responsibilities:
- Review physician orders, pharmacy documentation, and third-party authorization platforms
- Initiate and manage prior authorization requests with insurance providers
- Follow up with insurance companies regarding authorization approvals and status updates
- Submit additional clinical or financial documentation required for authorization determinations
- Verify patient insurance coverage, eligibility, and benefits
- Communicate effectively with clinics, physicians, insurance representatives, and internal departments
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of authorization and billing activities
- Support scheduling, admitting, registration, and billing-related processes as needed
- Utilize Microsoft Office applications and healthcare systems efficiently
- Ensure compliance with organizational policies, financial procedures, and healthcare regulations
- Maintain productivity, quality standards, and customer service expectations
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Associate’s Degree with two (2) years of relevant healthcare experience
OR
High School Diploma/GED with four (4) years of relevant healthcare experience - Minimum 2 years of healthcare business office experience in a hospital, physician practice, surgery center, or health plan environment
- Minimum 1 year of prior authorization experience with a healthcare provider or insurance company
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology, CPT codes, and diagnosis codes required
- Experience with insurance verification, hospital registration, billing, or healthcare data processing preferred
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word and Excel
- Strong organizational, communication, and multitasking skills
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced healthcare administrative environment
