Job Title: Authorization Specialist – Admitting / Scheduling / Billing
Location: Ithaca, NY
Duration: 13 Weeks
Shift: Day Shift | Monday–Friday | 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM
Guaranteed Hours: 40 Hours/Week

Compensation:

  • Pay Rate: $30/hour

Position Overview:

We are seeking an experienced Authorization Specialist to support prior authorization, scheduling, billing, and insurance verification processes within a healthcare environment. The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of medical terminology, insurance authorization workflows, and healthcare administrative operations while maintaining a high level of professionalism and patient service.

Responsibilities:

  • Review physician orders, pharmacy documentation, and third-party authorization platforms
  • Initiate and manage prior authorization requests with insurance providers
  • Follow up with insurance companies regarding authorization approvals and status updates
  • Submit additional clinical or financial documentation required for authorization determinations
  • Verify patient insurance coverage, eligibility, and benefits
  • Communicate effectively with clinics, physicians, insurance representatives, and internal departments
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of authorization and billing activities
  • Support scheduling, admitting, registration, and billing-related processes as needed
  • Utilize Microsoft Office applications and healthcare systems efficiently
  • Ensure compliance with organizational policies, financial procedures, and healthcare regulations
  • Maintain productivity, quality standards, and customer service expectations

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Associate’s Degree with two (2) years of relevant healthcare experience
    OR
    High School Diploma/GED with four (4) years of relevant healthcare experience
  • Minimum 2 years of healthcare business office experience in a hospital, physician practice, surgery center, or health plan environment
  • Minimum 1 year of prior authorization experience with a healthcare provider or insurance company
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology, CPT codes, and diagnosis codes required
  • Experience with insurance verification, hospital registration, billing, or healthcare data processing preferred
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word and Excel
  • Strong organizational, communication, and multitasking skills
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced healthcare administrative environment
