JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Psychiatry Department Chair and the Ambulatory Adult Division Chief, the Psychiatrist provides psychiatric assessment and management of patients with co-morbid medical disease and mental illness. The incumbent provides initial psychiatric consultations, including but not limited to ongoing medication management in the outpatient settings in Cook County (CCH).

Typical Duties

  • \u00b7 Provides general psychiatric assessment to referred patients in the Ambulatory Adult Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic.
  • \u00b7 Provides ongoing medication management to these patients.
  • \u00b7 Provides direct patient care to medically ill patients in the Ambulatory Outpatient Clinic to ensure safety, evaluate need for further hospitalization, and provide appropriate pharmacotherapy.
  • \u00b7 Provides education to patients, students, medical residents and clinic staff regarding mental health screening and treatment within a medical practice.
  • \u00b7 Documents all encounters with patients in medical record and communicates diagnoses and treatment recommendations to appropriate medical staff.
  • \u00b7 Reports any cases of abuse or neglect in accordance with State of Illinois Law and CCH Policies.
  • \u00b7 Refers patients to appropriate psychiatric, medical and social services.
  • \u00b7 Maintains active licensure with the State of Illinois, active credentials with Cook County Health, and active board certification with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
  • \u00b7 Engages in Ongoing Provider Performance Evaluation within the Department.
  • \u00b7 Attends required meetings, participates in assigned committees, and completes routine duties (on call duties) assigned.
  • \u00b7 Participates in necessary peer review and quality assurance activities.
  • \u00b7 Provides periods of coverage for other psychiatrists in different settings within the system (primarily in the Stroger inpatient and emergency settings), as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • \u00b7 Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) Degree from an accredited college, university or foreign equivalent
  • \u00b7 Licensed as a Physician and Surgeon in the State of Illinois prior to starting employment
  • \u00b7 Must be cleared for privileges by Medical Staff Services by start of employment
  • \u00b7 Board Certification in General Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) or Board Eligible by the ABPN and must obtain Board Certification within two (2) years of starting this employment
  • \u00b7 Completion of accredited General Psychiatry Residency Program
  • \u00b7 Bilingual

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience with Medication Assisted Treatment
  • Prior experience in Telepsychiatry
  • Bilingual
  • Certification in addiction medicine

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics

  • \u00b7 Specific knowledge and/or experience with gender, age, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, SES, substance abuse and medical issues of the treatment population served.
  • \u00b7 Knowledge of all applicable departmental, Cook County, state, and federal regulations regarding patient care.
  • \u00b7 Skills in teaching and supervising psychology trainees in psychiatric assessment, psychotherapeutic methods, and psychological testing.
  • \u00b7 Excellent human relations and oral/written communication skills.
  • \u00b7 Strong organizational skills to manage large volume of patients and referrals.
  • \u00b7 Ability to assess information, apply critical thinking to determine course of action, and relay this information to patients, families, and clinical staff.
  • \u00b7 Ability to provide clear and concise documentation regarding patients and to maintain this information in a confidential manner.
  • \u00b7 Ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries with all staff, trainees, and patients at all times.
  • \u00b7 Ability to physically perform in terms of physical movements, vision, hearing, and speech
  • \u00b7 Ability to work independently, be able to prioritize, and manage time.
  • \u00b7 Willingness to provide psychiatric consultation and care to all Cook County Health & Hospitals System sites, including Stroger Hospital, Oak Forest Hospital, and Provident Hospital campuses.
  • \u00b7 Willingness and ability to provide brief periods of coverage for other psychiatrists in different settings within the system (primarily in the Stroger inpatient and emergency settings).
