GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Office of the Wyoming State Archaeologist (OWSA) is hiring two At-Will Employee Contract (AWEC) Archaeological Field Technician positions from July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027.

These temporary positions will support a field project focused on documenting and recording rock art sites on state-owned lands across Wyoming. These positions will involve travel throughout the state of Wyoming, extensive fieldwork in remote environments, detailed site recording, and collaboration with cultural resource teams to ensure accurate documentation and preservation of rock images.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Relocate and document previously recorded rock art sites on State-owned lands
  • Conduct systematic field surveys to identify site boundaries
  • Record site data using GPS units, and digital photography
  • Produce detailed descriptions, illustrations, sketches, and condition assessments of rock art panels
  • Assist in mapping site locations using GIS software and spatial data collection tools
  • Follow state and federal guidelines for cultural resource documentation and site protection
  • Post-processing of digital imagery to create 3-D models
  • Maintain accurate field notes and organize collected data for reporting
  • Support the preparation of a technical report, and a public document
  • Work safely and effectively in rugged, remote outdoor environments under varying weather conditions
  • Collaborate with team members, land managers, and project supervisors as needed

Qualifications

PREFERENCES:

  • Bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a closely related field
  • Demonstrated experience with rock art documentation methods, archaeological fieldwork and site recording
  • Experience with GPS data collection and basic GIS applications
  • Ability to hike long distances and work outdoors in challenging terrain and weather conditions
  • Valid driver's license and ability to operate 4WD vehicles

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Previous experience recording rock art (petroglyphs/pictographs) in Wyoming or Surrounding States
  • Knowledge of Wyoming cultural resources and state recording protocols
  • Experience with digital photography techniques for rock art documentation (e.g., DStretch or similar tools), and 3-D imaging (e.g. Photomodeler) of rock art.
  • Graduate-level coursework in Archaeology or related discipline

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Ability to hike up to 10 miles per day carrying field equipment
  • Capability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds
  • Ability to work in remote areas with limited access to facilities

NOTES:

  • Full-time (typically 40 hours/week; may vary based on field conditions)
  • Per diem: Federal per diem (meals and incidental expenses) rates for Wyoming apply. Per diem will be reimbursed following completion of travel.
  • Single-room lodging at available hotels will be reimbursed upon completion of travel.
  • These at-will contract positions will begin on or after July 1, 2026 and expire upon the completion of the project or on June 30, 2027
