Purpose of the Position:

The Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach will assist the Strength and Conditioning Coach in the management, design, and implementation of strength and conditioning programs for assigned teams, and assist in the implementation of training programs for all athletic teams. Programs include but are not limited to strength/power, speed, agility, and conditioning. The incumbent will work directly with the Strength and Conditioning Coach, student-athletes, and the coaching staff to develop, illustrate, oversee, and document the progress of the student-athletes'' physical fitness and conditioning. Provide nutritional guidance and resource support, serve as a liaison to the Compliance Office for additions or deletions to the athletic rosters, serve as a positive role model for the athletes, work to enhance community relations, and perform other related duties or projects as assigned. The primary and most important responsibility of the Assistant Strength Coach is instructing student-athletes.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Assist the Strength and Conditioning Coach in the development, administration, and implementation of strength and conditioning programs for varsity athletes within the philosophy and guidelines of the department, as laid out by the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics.
  • Provide teaching, detailed instruction, and education to student-athletes. Execute all training exercises safely and correctly, specific to performance enhancement methods to achieve desired results. Enforce appropriate safety procedures.
  • Teach student-athletes how to perform the individual sport and effective body mechanics, and instruct on technique to enhance strength, flexibility, speed, conditioning, and to prevent injuries during athletic participation.
  • Conduct testing and evaluation of student-athletes to effectively monitor desired training outcomes.
  • Administer, monitor, and assist in the supervision and implementation of off-season, pre-season, and in-season sport-specific strength and conditioning programs for varsity athletes.
  • Increase the athletic ability and performance of student-athletes. Develop regimens to prevent injuries.
  • Responsible for risk management in the weight/strength facility and overseeing equipment maintenance.
  • Administer pre-season and off-season fitness evaluations.
  • Coordinate strength and conditioning programs with related rehabilitation activities developed by athletic trainers.
  • Perform database management and maintain confidential, appropriate electronic and manual records and documentation for each sport/athlete.
  • Ensure compliance with UAH, Ivy League, and NCAA policies and regulations, including NCAA policies on banned substances.
  • Provide nutritional guidance for athletes, including information on nutrition and diet for the health and optimum performance of the student-athletes.
  • Instill a winning attitude and strong work ethic in student-athletes.
  • Motivate student-athletes to strive to achieve their highest potential, keeping in mind their various skill levels.
  • Participate in special projects
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor''s degree
  • 1 year of full-time work experience or equivalent/National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA)-Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists (CSCS) or Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCA)-Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified (SCCC) certification and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)-Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification by start date.
  • Must possess organizational experience
  • Knowledge of MS Office Suite, to include Microsoft Office Word and Excel
  • Knowledge of coaching Olympic-style lifts, plyometrics, speed development, conditioning, and flexibility
  • Must have strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills
  • Must possess a good work ethic and the ability to work well with a diverse population of students, coaches, athletes, and training staff
  • Must adhere to NCCA rules and regulations/must be able to work flexible hours (nights, weekends, holidays, extended hours, and some travel)
  • Must have current First Aid and CPR certification.

Desired Qualifications:

  • A master''s degree in a related field is preferred
  • Prior coaching experience is desired/athletic and strength equipment maintenance experience is preferred
  • Ability to organize and lead in a large group setting is desired
  • Experience as a sports player is beneficial
