Associate Teaching Professor; Clinic Director - Low Income Taxpayer Clinic
Syracuse University College of Law invites applications for the position of Associate Teaching Professor and Director of the Sherman F. Levey '57, L'59 Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC). This is a three-year contract faculty position eligible for subsequent three- or five-year contract renewals.
The LITC provides legal assistance to lower-income taxpayers involved in controversies with the Internal Revenue Service, including collection, examination, appeals, tax notices, account issues, and related federal tax disputes. Students represent clients in administrative proceedings before the IRS, and, when appropriate, in judicial proceedings before the United States Tax Court or federal courts.
The Clinic Director will direct the operation of the LITC, teach the LITC Seminar, supervise students on existing client matters, and participate with other clinical faculty in the operation of the Office of Clinical Legal Education. Candidates will be expected to teach in the residential law program and the online JD interactive program. In addition to directing the clinic, each clinic director is typically expected to teach additional courses in their area of expertise. Duties may be adjusted over time by the College of Law as needs evolve.
Candidates should have an excellent academic record and a J.D. from an accredited law school. Preferred post-J.D. experience and credentials include advanced degrees, judicial clerkships, relevant legal practice, proficiency with the use of AI tools in legal practice, litigation or administrative advocacy experience, and prior teaching experience. A demonstrated commitment to excellent classroom teaching, student supervision, mentoring, and training new attorneys is required. Candidates must have the ability to work effectively with students, colleagues, and community members from different backgrounds.
The anticipated start date is August 2027. This is an academic-year position based in Syracuse, NY with up to fifteen (15) credits of teaching across fall and spring semesters, with additional compensation provided for summer case oversight and related clinic responsibilities. The salary range for an Associate Teaching Professor, depending on experience, is $80,000 to $115,000, plus benefits.
Interested applicants should submit a cover letter, resume, writing sample, and the names of three references who can assess the candidate's potential as a legal academic using Syracuse University's online application system. Candidates with questions may contact Craig Boise, Dean Emeritus, Professor of Law, and Appointments Chair at lawappointments@syr.edu, or Professor Beth Kubala, Executive Director of Clinical Education, at egkubala@syr.edu.
