DESCRIPTION

The County of Yolo is recruiting to fill one (1) regular, full-time position in the class of Associate Civil Engineer OR Senior Civil Engineer in the Integrated Waste Division at the Department of Community Services.

The Position

The candidate selected for this position may be hired as an Associate Civil Engineer OR a Senior Civil Engineer, based on experience and at the discretion of the appointing authority. The salary ranges for each classification level are as follows:

  • Associate Civil Engineer: $120,889.60 - $146,952.00 annually

Under direction, the Associate Civil Engineer performs professional engineering work supporting the operation and improvement of the Yolo County Landfill, including infrastructure systems such as drainage, roadways, and environmental controls, while ensuring regulatory compliance. The position focuses on preparing plans, specifications, estimates, and reports; assisting with construction oversight and contract administration; and coordinating with staff, consultants, and regulatory agencies to support capital projects and day-to-day landfill operations.

  • Senior Civil Engineer: $135,283.20 - $164,444.80 annually

Under general direction, the Senior Civil Engineer leads and manages engineering projects and programs for the Yolo County Landfill, overseeing the planning, design, and delivery of complex infrastructure and capital improvement projects while ensuring regulatory compliance. This role serves as a senior technical resource, managing consultants, reviewing and approving engineering work, coordinating with regulatory agencies, and providing direction to staff to support safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible landfill operations.

The ideal candidate is a skilled civil engineering professional with experience in solid waste, environmental, or public infrastructure engineering. They possess a strong understanding of engineering principles and regulatory requirements and have experience supporting or managing projects in a regulated environment, with the ability to apply technical knowledge to real-world landfill operations, maintenance, and capital improvement projects.

This individual is a collaborative and effective communicator who works well with multidisciplinary teams, including operations staff, engineers, consultants, regulatory agencies, and the public. They demonstrate strong organizational and project coordination skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, contribute to technical problem-solving, and support project delivery. A successful candidate is committed to public service and environmental stewardship and will support Yolo Countys mission by helping ensure landfill operations and infrastructure projects protect public health and safety while maintaining compliance and promoting long-term sustainability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications required for a candidate to proceed in the selection process are as follows:

Associate Civil Engineer

  • Education: Graduation from college or a university with a B.S. degree in civil engineering or a related field; AND

  • Experience: Three (3) years of experience as a registered civil engineer; AND

  • Certificate: Possession of a valid certificate of registration as a civil engineer issued by the California State Board of Registration for Civil and Professional Engineers; AND

  • Drivers License: Positions in this classification require incumbents to possess and maintain a valid California drivers license, Class C or higher, to carry out job related duties. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical or mental disability may request a reasonable accommodation.

Note: Non-California applicants must be registered as Civil Engineers in the State of residence, meet the three-year experience requirement as a registered civil engineer, and must obtain registration from the California State Board of Registration for Civil and Professional Engineers within nine (9) months of hire. Applicants with an out-of-state drivers license must obtain a CA license within nine months of hire. For special assignments, possession of a valid certification of registration as a certified Hydrogeologist or certified Engineering Geologist issued by the California State Board for Geologists and Geophysicist along with education and experience as a California Certified Engineering Geologist or Certified Hydrogeologist in solid waste management, environmental, geology, hydrogeology engineering and/or related fields will be required.

Senior Civil Engineer

  • Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a B.S degree in Civil Engineering or a related field; AND

  • Experience: Five (5) years of full-time experience as a registered civil engineer; AND

  • Certificate: Possession of a valid certificate of registration as a civil engineer issued by the California State Board of Registration for Civil and Professional Engineers; AND

  • License: Positions in this classification require incumbents to possess and maintain a valid California drivers license, Class C or higher, to carry out job related duties. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical or mental disability may request reasonable accommodation.
