The Department of Psychology within the John R. and Kathy R. Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University N.C. A&T invites applications and nominations for the position of Department Chair. The Department Chair position is a 12-month position that reports to the Dean of the Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences and serves as the departments chief administrative and academic leader.
The Department Chair will be expected to provide visionary leadership of innovative programs with a strong educator-researcher emphasis. In addition to the general oversight of the department, they will be responsible for strategic planning, budget development, management, and allocation, recruitment and retention of faculty and students, faculty staff, and student development, management, and improvement of curricula, evaluating faculty performance, program assessments, and reviews, obtaining and maintaining accreditation, developing external partnerships, interacting with other departments and university leaders to represent the goals of the department.
The Department Chair must implement strategies to develop research infrastructure. Other responsibilities include overseeing course schedules, faculty evaluations, and supervision of departmental staff, as well as providing leadership and vision for the department. The chair is also expected to conduct research in their area of expertise and publish in refereed journals and/or conference proceedings, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses within the Department, reducing teaching load, and serving on departmental, college, and university-level committees.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit
N.C. A&T is a public land-grant doctoral research institution and has been the largest historically Black university in the country for the past decade. With an enrollment of 14,311 students in Fall 2024, the university offers 59 undergraduate degree programs, 36 masters programs, and 12 doctoral programs. It is Americas top producer of Black graduates in Engineering and Agricultural Science, bachelors programs, as well as a top five producer in numerous additional disciplines, including Liberal Arts and Communications/Journalism.
Nationally recognized for its leadership and excellence in STEM education and research, N.C. A&T is classified as R2-High Research Activity" in the Carnegie Classifications and is poised to achieve R1-Very High Research Activity" status. It also holds Carnegies earned credential in Community Engagement and the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities APLU Innovation and Economic Prosperity designation. With an annual economic impact of $2.4 billion, N.C. The College of Health and Human Sciences comprises six departments and the School of Nursing. The College offers the following undergraduate degree programs: Communication Sciences and Disorders, Health Services Management, Kinesiology, Nursing, Psychology, and Sociology. At the graduate level, the College offers four graduate degree programs, including the Masters in Physician Assistant Studies PA program, Master of Social Work MSW, Master of Science in Health Psychology, and PhD in Social Work. Three additional doctoral programs are being developed, including the Doctor of Nurse Practice DNP, PhD in Applied Psychology, and PhD in Sociology.
The HCHHS is also home to the Center of Excellence in Integrative Health Disparities and Equity Research CIHDER, a hub for multidisciplinary research and community engagement efforts to alleviate health inequities. The HCHHS capitalizes on the synergistic relationships between these departments to develop advanced academic programming, enhance the mentoring of trainees, conduct collaborative multidisciplinary research, and scholastic activity.
The Department of Psychology is a supportive community of committed faculty and practitioners whose goals are to introduce students to the ideas and concepts relevant to this discipline, encourage interdisciplinary learning, prepare students for study in graduate schools, prepare students for entry-level jobs requiring knowledge in psychology, and train students to conduct both basic and applied research. These goals are reached through quality classroom instruction, departmental colloquia, departmental student organizations, internship opportunities, through independent study, and individualized research projects.
The Department of Psychology has 840 enrolled undergraduate students and 30 students in the MS in Health Psychology. A new PhD program in Applied Psychology is under development with the first cohort of students enrolling in Fall 2025. The department seeks a dynamic and visionary leader who will build upon the departments strengths to provide exceptional educational experiences, recruit and develop outstanding faculty, promote faculty-driven scholarship, and support graduate education.
