Position Information

Job Title Associate Head Men's Wrestling Coaching Instructor Summary

The Associate Head Men's Wrestling Coaching Instructor (Associate Head Coach) collaborates with the Head Men's and Women's Wrestling Coaching Instructor in providing support for the organization of the program and implementation of meet and practice plans. This includes, but is not limited to communication with athletes, preparation of facilities, distribution and care of equipment, scouting opponents, and film breakdown. The Associate Head Coach will provide support for the players' academic success and track academic progress as needed. The Associate Head Coach facilitates communication with several constituents, which include faculty, academic advisors, assistant deans, and parents. Internally, the Associate Head Coach works with the Equipment and Facilities staff, Athletic Trainers, and Assistant ADs when necessary.

The Associate Head Coach supports the Head Men and Women's Wrestling Coaching Instructor to provide coaching instruction and administrative support to other coaches and administrative staff while ensuring compliance with all related governing bodies including the NCAA, NCAC Conference and institutional regulations. The Associate Head Coach will also have direct responsibilities for the coordination of recruitment of prospective student athletes and supervise graduate assistants and part time coaches as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Facilitate practice time to include such responsibilities as implementing drills and meet plans into practices, offering input for meet strategies. The Associate Head Coach will assist players in the learning process, and keep track of players' punctuality and participation in practices when needed.
  • Serve as the primary contact for the men's wrestling program as administered by the Head Men's and Women's Wrestling Coaching Instructor. All matters related specifically to the men's wrestling program will be directed towards the Associate Head Coach.
  • Implement and lead elements of practices and meets to include preparation, effective execution of drills, one-on-one development work with athletes as warranted and fulfillment of game day responsibilities.
  • Assist the Head M&W Wrestling Coaching Instructor with the development of strategies for a successful program including well-organized practice plans and participation in the development and execution of meet strategies.
  • Oversee and responsible for the men's wrestling budget and purchasing items.
  • Assist with the monitoring of academic progress and meet with individual student-athletes to ensure academic success and compliance with university and NCAA academic standards.
  • Mentor student-athletes as to proper conduct and decorum.
  • Actively support the Head M&W Wrestling Coaching Instructor's philosophy and assist in communicating this philosophy with all stakeholders.
  • Coordinate the evaluation and recruitment of prospective student-athletes, and the tracking of them through the Slate system for the men's wrestling program.
  • Advise and lead staff and student athletes in developing and implementing official visit itineraries for prospective student-athletes in compliance with NCAA requirements.
  • Assist in the development of community outreach programs, and promotional activities in collaboration with internal staff, and assist in approved fundraising activity as designated by the head coach.
  • Coordinate all administrative requirements for the team including travel arrangements and itineraries for the men's wrestling program.
  • Work in conjunction with the Head M&W Wrestling Coaching Instructor and the Strength and Conditioning Instructor to design and implement targeted development and training programs appropriate to the specific needs of athletes and the team.
  • Attend rules education, sessions and complete necessary forms for compliance upon request.
  • Follow proper procedures for purchasing and resource allocation and monitor spending.
  • Supervise graduate assistant and part-time staff within the program as assigned.
  • Lead in the coordination of team player tryouts and selection.
  • Attend athletic department meetings and collaborate with the Head Wrestling Coaching Instructor and Athletic Director / Assistant Athletic Directors on schedules, programs and engagement.
  • Participate in pre-season and post-season meetings and programs as appropriate.
  • Develop and provide instructor-led rules training to team, athletic department and others upon request.
  • Represent department and institution to internal and external constituents. Responsible for positive public relations and communications with constituents.
  • Work closely with athletic trainers and follow injury and drug testing protocols.
  • Follow all University, North Coast Athletic Conference and NCAA policies and regulations.
  • Meet all deadlines for paperwork (i.e. rosters, physicals, officials' ratings).
  • Exhibit enthusiasm towards athletes and display respect for the entire program (i.e. officials, opponents, parents, schools, property, equipment, etc.).
  • Dress appropriately and professionally for games, practices, recruit/family visits and other school/athletic functions.
  • Foster school spirit by promoting other sports.
  • Maintain fair, consistent, and appropriate relationships with student athletes.
  • Maintain composure and exemplary conduct during practice and games.
  • Participate in athletics training and professional development programs and coaching staff meetings.
  • All other duties as assigned by the Head Coaching Instructor.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of collegiate coaching experience or two (2) years of successful coaching experience as a head or assistant coach in high school or club teams or equivalent.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and maintain certifications in CPR and AED.
  • Excellent organizational skills; ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, and work independently
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse constituencies.
  • Must understand and comply with NCAA, North Coast Athletic Conference, and University rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Interest in understanding and supporting John Carroll's mission to inspire individuals to excel in learning, leadership, and service in the region and in the world.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree from an accredited institution.
  • Two (2) year of collegiate coaching experience or four (4) years successful coaching experience as a head or assistant coach in high school or club teams or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate students in a positive manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and organize effectively, teach fundamentals and techniques associated with the sport and experience with teams that are competitive and show evidence of being well coached.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide positive leadership and to serve as a positive role model as a coach and colleague.
  • Successful prior participation in the sport at the high school, college, club or professional level.

Normal Work Location, Hours and Conditions

Extensive travel involved. University core business hours are generally 8:30 am - 5:00 pm. However, this position will require work to be performed outside of normal business hours based on the nature of competitive and recruiting schedules.

Physical Requirements

Ability to demonstrate the physical movements of the sport. Sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; to travel to other office locations and to verbally communicate and exchange information

Hours Full Time FLSA Exempt (Salary) Compensation & Benefits

Starting salary will be $40,000 - $45,000, commensurate with qualifications.
