Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit

The Innovate UNCG Incubator supports members of the UNCG community as they turn ideas into impact. Bringing together a variety of offices, initiatives, and sources of expertise, we offer support related to entrepreneurship, social innovation and social entrepreneurship, IP protection, licensing, and more. UNCG innovators connect through our virtual community of practice and school- and college-based innovation hubs.

Position Summary

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) seeks a highly skilled and visionary leader to serve as the Associate Director for Engaged Research Centers and Institutes within the Division of Research and Engagement. The Associate Director will provide research development, business development, and strategic direction to strengthen and expand the university's engaged research portfolio. This position is responsible for enhancing the competitiveness of UNCG's centers and institutes, increasing their external funding, and advancing their role in addressing critical community, regional, and national challenges.

Minimum Qualifications

• Doctoral degree in a research-related discipline, business, public administration, or related field.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in research development, external funding, business development, or higher education leadership.
• Demonstrated success in securing external funding from federal, state, foundation, or industry sources.
• Strong record of building partnerships across academia, government, industry, and community organizations.
• Excellent communication, negotiation, and strategic planning skills.

Additional Required Certifications, Licensures, and Certificates Preferred Qualifications

• Experience managing or supporting research centers, institutes, or large-scale collaborative initiatives.
• Familiarity with federal sponsor priorities, funding review processes, and regional economic development landscapes.
• Proven ability to align research initiatives with community needs and economic development goals.

Research Development

Essential Tasks

• Identify and promote funding opportunities that align with the missions of engaged research centers and institutes.
• Support faculty and center leadership in developing competitive grant proposals to federal, state, foundation, and industry sponsors.
• Facilitate large-scale, interdisciplinary, and multi-institutional proposals that enhance UNCG's research reputation and impact.
• Provide training and resources to strengthen faculty capacity in grantsmanship and external funding strategies.

Percentage Of Time 15% Key Responsibility

Business Development

Essential Tasks

• Cultivate partnerships with industry, nonprofits, government agencies, and community organizations to advance the work of engaged centers.
• Identify opportunities for contract research, sponsorships, and fee-for-service agreements.
• Work collaboratively with the Office of Technology Transfer, Corporate and Foundation Relations, and other units to support commercialization and entrepreneurship arising from engaged research.
• Represent UNCG in economic development and business engagement initiatives, positioning engaged centers as engines of innovation and impact.

Percentage Of Time 10% Key Responsibility

Strategic Development

Essential Tasks

• Develop and implement strategic plans to increase the visibility, funding, and impact of engaged centers and institutes.
• Provide leadership and oversight to ensure centers align with UNCG's Forward Together Strategic Plan and contribute to the university's trajectory toward Carnegie R1 classification.

Percentage Of Time 10% Key Responsibility

Staff Supervision, Leadership and Administration

Essential Tasks

• Serve as a key point of contact and advocate for center and institute directors within the Division of Research and Engagement.
• Coordinate administrative support, reporting requirements, and compliance for engaged research centers.
• Mentor staff and faculty leaders to enhance management capacity and sustainability planning for centers.

Research

Essential Tasks

• Conduct applied research and data analysis to support the NC Safe Neighborhoods initiative, including examining crime trends, community risk factors, and evidence-based intervention strategies.
• Collaborate with community partners, law enforcement, and local stakeholders to gather data, understand community needs, and ensure research is grounded in real-world contexts.
• Develop reports, briefs, and presentations that translate research findings into actionable insights for policymakers, practitioners, and community organizations.
• Support the design and evaluation of programs aimed at improving neighborhood safety, including measuring outcomes and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement.
• Assist in securing external funding by contributing to grant proposals, literature reviews, and research plans aligned with the goals of NC Safe Neighborhoods.
