Job Description and Functions

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking an assistant temporary Fabricator for the Equipment Program in Cheyenne, Wyoming. This position will build and fabricate snow removal equipment, repair and maintain a safe, high-quality equipment fleet, and perform a wide variety of repairs and preventive maintenance, and safety inspections on all types of heavy equipment and vehicles with direct supervision.

This is a temporary, Part-time position (approx. 9 months). Cheyenne is a steadily growing community along the Front Range but still true to the Old Wests history. The city offers nearby mountain biking, skiing, hiking, fishing, hunting, and other outdoor activities. Cheyenne is also home to the "Daddy of em All" - Cheyenne Frontier Days - held the last week of July. Wyoming is one of only seven states with no state income tax.

Essential Functions

The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed at the job level.

  • Assists in welding fabrication as required.
  • Assists Fabricators to diagnose hydraulic and electrical problems.
  • Assists in rebuilds of hydraulic systems by disassembling, inspecting, and replacing broken and worn-out parts.
  • Reads and interprets technical blueprints and electrical schematics.
  • Assists fabricator in designing, fabricates, bends, and installation of custom-fit stainless steel hydraulic lines and other parts and equipment.
  • Assists in ordering parts and supplies.
  • Assists in operation of lathes and milling machines for the fabrication of specialty and obsolete parts.
  • Inputs data into software tracking systems or databases, as needed.
  • Assists in assessing the needs of the client.
  • Assists in the maintenance and repairs pneumatic equipment.

Ability to perform a wide variety of repairs on automotive or heavy equipment and other self-propelled or towed equipment with limited supervision. Ability to overhaul and rebuild major components such as engines and transmissions, and drive train repairs. Ability to install various truck components, including extendible wing plows, hydraulic tanks, pumps, toolboxes, valves, and hitches. Installation of the truck bed and box accessories. Preparation/painting of various truck and spreader parts.

Qualifications and Preferences

PREFERENCES:

  • High School Diploma or GED, preference given to college or technical school students.
  • 0-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in Diesel Technology or Welding and Fabrication)

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of electrical theory, hydraulic theory, metallurgy, automotive, and diesel knowledge.
  • Knowledge of general shop, power train, engines, electrical, hydraulics, rigging, and administrative procedures.
  • Knowledge of precision machine tools, biomechanics, physiology, and welding processes.
  • Knowledge of diesel and gas engines, both mechanical and electronic, for overhauls and repairs.
  • Knowledge of the metallurgy of different steels.

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to travel.
