Assistant Teacher- Kirkland Child Care
Position Summary
The Assistant Teacher supports the daily operation of the classroom by assisting with supervision, learning activities, and maintaining a safe, nurturing, and clean environment for children. This role works under the direction of the Lead Teacher or Program Director and helps ensure compliance with Washington State DCYF licensing regulations.
Primary Responsibilities
Child Supervision and Support
• Supervise children at all times to ensure safety and well being
• Assist in implementing daily lesson plans and activities prepared by the Lead Teacher
• Support children with routines including meals, rest time, toileting, transitions, and outdoor play
• Encourage positive behavior using developmentally appropriate guidance strategies
• Model respectful communication and positive interactions
Health, Safety, and Licensing Compliance
• Follow all DCYF licensing regulations and program policies
• Maintain required staff to child ratios
• Complete required trainings including Child Care Basics, CPR and First Aid, bloodborne pathogens, and food handling if applicable
• Assist with maintaining accurate attendance and required documentation
• Immediately report incidents, injuries, or safety concerns to the Lead Teacher or Director
Cleaning and Environment Maintenance
• Wash and sanitize dishes after meals and snacks
• Clean and sanitize kitchen surfaces, tables, and high touch areas daily
• Clean and disinfect toys, materials, and learning equipment according to health standards
• Maintain cleanliness of playroom areas including sweeping, mopping, and organizing materials
• Clean and sanitize bathroom areas including sinks, toilets, diapering areas, and restocking supplies
• Support laundry needs such as washing bedding, bibs, or cleaning cloths
• Assist in maintaining an orderly and welcoming classroom environment
Family Interaction
• Greet families in a professional and welcoming manner
• Communicate daily information to families as directed by the Lead Teacher
• Maintain confidentiality of all children and families
Qualifications
• Must be at least 18 years of age
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Must be registered in MERIT and meet DCYF background clearance requirements
• Completion of Child Care Basics within required timeline
• Current safe sleep, food worker card, CPR and First Aid certification
• Ability to lift up to 40 pounds and actively engage with children indoors and outdoors Preferred
• Early Childhood Education credits or experience in licensed Child Care
• Strong communication and teamwork skills
• Reliable, punctual, and organized
Work Environment
This position requires frequent bending, lifting, sitting on the floor, outdoor supervision, and active engagement with young children. The Assistant Teacher plays a vital role in supporting both children and the Lead Teacher to ensure high quality care and a safe learning environment.
