JOB TITLE: Sports Specialist

BUSINESS TITLE: Sports Specialist (Assistant Swim Coach)

FLSA: Non-exempt

JOB SERIES: 0030 PAY LEVEL: NF-03

SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

Assists with the planning, supervision, administration, direction, execution, and promotion of a year-round, multilevel competitive swimming program for a variety of ages. Helps plan, supervise, administer, direct, execute, and promote Aquatics and Swim Team hosted events. Oversees workouts, team members and individual practice groups. Assists in staff training. Prioritizes assigned tasks. Under the direction of the supervisor, oversees seasonal personnel. Resolves complaints and initiates disciplinary actions.

Protects swimmers from hazardous conditions by safeguarding the lives of patrons by ensuring that safety and pool rules and regulations are enforced. Supervises swimmers for safety and crowd control. Performs rescue work, promptly renders emergency first aid, and calls for medical assistance as necessary. Performs water and land rescues equal to the standard of training when a water emergency is taking place (e.g. drowning, medical or trauma in the water). Manages respiratory and cardiac emergencies to include performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), bag-valve-mask resuscitation, or automatic external defibrillation (AED). Abides by all First Aid standards in treatment and care of equipment.

Teaches various swimming skills and water safety for various age groups. Prepares material for classes being taught. Ensures the safety of all patrons in the class.

Provides World Class Customer Service with an emphasis on courtesy. Assists customers and communicates positively in a friendly manner. Takes action to solve problems quickly. Alerts the higher-level supervisor, or proper point of contact for help when problems arise. Adheres to safety regulations and standards. Promptly reports any observed workplace hazards, and any injury, occupational illness, and/or property damage resulting from workplace mishaps to the immediate supervisor. Adheres to established standards of actively supporting the principles of the EEO program and prevention of sexual harassment.

Performs other related duties as assigned. This is a mixed position where the incumbent must be able to lift and carry objects up to 45lbs independently and objects over 45lbs with assistance is required, while performing normal duties in the area. May perform work that poses physical demands beyond normal requirements during rescue. Work may be performed in settings where exposure to moderate discomforts, high temperatures, and/or adverse weather conditions while on duty. Must be able to work irregular hours to include nights, weekends, and/or holidays on a rotating basis. Travel from base to base and to other countries may be required.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Three years of experience in recreational activities, such as aquatics, fitness, or sports.
  • Competitive swim team experience as an athlete and/or as a coach is highly desirable.
  • American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA) Level 2, or equivalent, is preferred.
  • Must be able to obtain Water Safety Instructor certification, or equivalent, within one year of employment.
  • Must be able to obtain nationally recognized certifications in Lifeguard training, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer or equivalent, Standard First Aid or equivalent within one year of employment.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to handle a person in the water who may panic or become unconscious.
  • Understanding of and the ability to enforce rigid safety regulations to ensure maximum protection of swimmers.
  • Working knowledge of the concepts, methods and techniques of competitive swimming as well as skill in applying the concepts, methods and techniques to achieve established goals.
  • Capable of directing the program in the absence of the supervisor.
  • Able to make sound recommendations for decisions on program changes and innovations.
  • Must be able to accommodate a flexible work schedule to include nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Employees hired into this position are required to complete the Blood and Body Fluids (BBF) medical certification within 60 days of their start date. This post-hire certification ensures compliance with Occupational Health guidelines and supports safe operational readiness for duties involving potential exposure risks.

Must be able to obtain and maintain a National Agency Check with Inquiries and State Criminal History Repository Check (Tier 1) with Childcare background checks which are required for positions that involve working with children under 18 years of age.
