The Assistant Superintendent of Instruction, Assessment, and Educational Engagement serves as a key leader in the district, responsible for overseeing and coordinating efforts to enhance instructional quality, assess student progress, and foster strong family and community partnerships. This leadership role requires a dynamic individual with a deep understanding of curriculum development, assessment practices, and strategies to promote meaningful family engagement in education.

Essential functions of the position are as follows:

Instructional Leadership and Collaboration

  • Lead the development and implementation of comprehensive culturally responsive instructional strategies for elementary and secondary education that align with district goals, curriculum standards, and best practices.
  • Collaborate with school principals, program directors, and instructional staff to ensure the effective planning, delivery, and evaluation of instructional programs that meet the diverse needs of students.
  • Provide guidance and support to school leaders in curriculum development, instructional design, and assessment practices to promote student engagement, learning, and achievement.
  • Oversee the development and administration of assessment practices, including formative and summative assessments, to monitor student progress, inform instruction, and evaluate program effectiveness.
  • Oversee the design and implementation of intervention programs and practices, ensuring they meet the needs of the target population and align with best practices in the field.
  • Analyze assessment data to identify trends, strengths, and areas for improvement in instruction and use findings to inform decision-making, resource allocation, and professional development initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to establish and refine accountability systems to monitor the implementation and outcomes of elementary and secondary instructional programs, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations and district standards.
  • Facilitate the provision of professional development opportunities for teachers and staff to enhance instructional practices, assessment literacy, and data-driven decision-making.
  • Stay abreast of research, trends, and innovations in elementary and secondary education, assessment, and accountability, and apply knowledge to improve district practices.

Grant Writing and Oversight

  • Conduct research to identify potential grant opportunities that align with the district''s goals and priorities.
  • Writing and maintaining entitlement grants in collaboration with the Assistant Superintendent for School Turnaround and Accountability.
  • Develop and maintain systems for tracking grant awards, expenditures, and reporting deadlines.
  • Coordinate with finance and accounting staff to ensure proper allocation and documentation of grant funds.
  • Monitor grant activities to ensure compliance with funder regulations and reporting requirements.

Family and Community Educational Engagement

  • Foster partnerships with families, community stakeholders, and external organizations to support elementary education initiatives and promote student success.
  • Develop and implement initiatives to foster strong partnerships between schools, families, and the broader community.
  • Plan and coordinate family engagement events, workshops, and activities to empower families to support their children''s academic success.
  • Serve as a liaison between schools and community organizations to enhance resources and opportunities for students and families.
  • Provide guidance to all schools on effective communication strategies to promote family involvement in school activities and decision-making processes.

Other Responsibilities

  • Ensure that principal evaluations are conducted in accordance with district policies, state regulations, and professional standards for educational leadership evaluation. Uphold principles of fairness, objectivity, and integrity in the evaluation process.
  • Prepare reports and presentations on school improvement efforts and outcomes for district leadership, the PPS School Committee, and other stakeholders.
  • Develop and implement mentoring and induction programs for new teachers and administrators, including program design, curriculum development, and resource allocation.
  • Oversee interdistrict transfer requests.
  • Oversee home education plans and outcomes.
  • Provide oversight and support for homeless and foster students.
  • Supervising and evaluating principals who lead schools that have not been identified for targeted assistance by DESE
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
