Overview:

As an Assistant Store Manager of People Operations, you are the go-to partner for everything that keeps our store teams supported, informed, and set up for success. You serve as the central point of contact for frontline associates while providing direct support to the Store Manager and leadership team across hiring, scheduling, onboarding, training, engagement, and performance practices.

You will partner closely with the Store Manager, Talent Business Partner, and Talent Acquisition to ensure accurate people records, consistent Talent processes, and a positive, inclusive environment for associates. This role blends organization, discretion, communication, and hands-on leadership to create a smooth and supportive experience for every associate in the store.

What Does an Assistant Store Manager of People Operations Do?

  • Maintain Accurate People Data: Ensure associate availability, frontline records, and reporting are consistently up to date in Workday. Support leaders with accurate documentation and reporting for Talent processes.

  • Own Frontline Staffing Logistics: Open, manage, and close out job requisitions for frontline roles. Work with Talent Acquisition partners to post openings, welcome candidates, coordinate interviews, support job offer steps, background processes where applicable, I-9 validation, and administration of internal mobility and interim assignment processes.

  • Coordinate New Hire Orientation and Onboarding: Co-facilitate new hire orientation and ensure new associates receive a thorough introduction to Wayfair, store expectations, and required onboarding steps.

  • Support Training and Development Execution: Assign training plans, review LMS reports to ensure timely completion of required learning, and partner with leaders to identify skill gaps and cross training opportunities across the store.

  • Manage Tier 1 Talent Case Work and Employee Inquiries: Oversee employee related tickets including accommodations, leaves of absence, complaints, and general Talent questions, ensuring timely follow through and communication.

  • Support Talent Management and Performance Practices: Guide leaders through performance reviews, documentation, corrective actions, and conduct matters for frontline associates. Escalate complex or high risk cases to the Talent Business Partner as needed.

  • Drive Engagement and Store Environment Standards: Coordinate recognition programs, town halls, cultural awareness activities, and maintain welcoming break room, training room, and communication board spaces. Track associate feedback to inform engagement planning.

  • Build and Support the Store People Plan: Partner with the Store Manager and ASMs on development plans for high potential associates, succession planning support, and follow up actions that strengthen internal growth.

  • Provide Visible Store Leadership Support: Maintain a leadership presence on the sales floor as needed, support opening and closing routines, and contribute to overall operational success alongside the leadership team.

  • Ensure Compliance and Confidentiality: Maintain strict confidentiality, accurate recordkeeping, and consistent application of Talent policies and processes.

  • Operate as “One Team”: You will support Wayfair’s total store goals by cross-training across key store functions, including sales and back-of-house operations. You'll flex where needed to support customers, teammates, store needs and peak business periods.

You’ll Thrive in This Role if You Have:

  • Frontline People Leadership Experience: 2+ years of HR generalist or people leadership experience in a frontline workforce environment, retail preferred.

  • Employment Practice Knowledge: Working knowledge of US employment law and ability to guide managers through policy aligned practices.

  • Talent Systems Familiarity: Experience using Workday or similar HRIS, scheduling systems such as Quinyx, and LMS reporting tools.

  • Strong Communication Skills: Clear, confident communication across written, verbal, and digital channels.

  • Ability to Influence and Partner: Comfortable advising leaders and collaborating with Talent Business Partners, Talent Acquisition, and store leadership.

  • High Trust and Discretion: Proven ability to manage sensitive and confidential information with care.

  • Organizational Strength: Skilled at balancing multiple priorities, deadlines, and shifting needs in a fast paced store environment.

  • Engagement and Culture Focus: Passion for creating an inclusive, positive environment through recognition, events, and associate feedback.

  • Tech Comfort: Familiar with Google Suite and mobile business tools.

  • Schedule Flexibility: Availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as business needs require.

Additional Physical and Environmental Requirements:

  • Physical Activity: Frequent standing, walking, and reaching with hands and arms; occasional sitting, climbing, balancing, and crawling.

  • Mobility & Movement: Frequent stooping, kneeling, and crouching throughout the day.

  • Lifting Ability: Ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs independently regularly. Some projects may involve heavier items, which must be managed with proper assistance or equipment.

  • Vision Requirements: Includes close, distance, color, and peripheral vision; depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

  • Temperature Flexibility: Comfortable in environments with varying temperature conditions.

  • Noise Tolerance: Occasional exposure to moderate noise levels and physical activity.

  • Safety Awareness: Minimal exposure to workplace or environmental hazards, must adhere to all safety protocols.
