Position Description:

The University of Louisville (UofL) is seeking a highly motivated veterinarian to support its growing animal research program.

The Comparative Medicine Research Unit (CMRU) is hiring a clinical veterinarian with a primary emphasis in rodent clinical medicine, with a backup role for large animal clinical care. This position will supervise the rodent clinical care team, consisting of 1 rodent clinical care supervisor and secondary supervision of approximately 4 veterinary technicians and assistants. Shared program responsibilities will include but not be limited to: 1) assisting in the management of UofL animal facilities including clinical care and health monitoring associated with rodent quarantine, transgenic animals, large animal models and medical/educational research, 2) contributing to program planning, design, renovation/construction, and operation of rodent animal facilities, 3) completing special administrative projects as assigned by the Assistant Director or the Associate Vice President for Animal Welfare, and 4) participation in a broad range of regulatory activities associated with animal care and use including those related to IACUC, AAALAC, OLAW, and the USDA.

This position will have a faculty appointment in the University of Louisville School of Medicine as an Assistant Professor (Term) and ability to apply for promotion to Associate Professor (Term) according to School of Medicine requirements. Collaboration or primary research is expected as part of the faculty appointment.

Required qualifications:

  • DVM or VMD degree from an AVMA-accredited institution

  • License to practice in the U.S. (licensure to practice in Kentucky required within 12 months of hire)

Preferred qualifications:

  • ACLAM Board Certification or eligibility

  • At least 2 years' experience in clinical care of rodents or other laboratory animals

  • Previous management of large rodent populations

  • Teaching/training experience in rodent procedures & surgery

  • Supervision of support staff

  • Excellent surgical skills (rodent & large animal)

  • Germ-free/Gnotobiotic experience

  • ABSL2 and/or ABSL3 experience
