The Division of Extension and Engagement invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term, Assistant Professor of Practice position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the supervisory team: Extension Agriculture & Natural Resources Program Leader; Extension Forestry & Natural Resources Program Leader; and the Biological & Ecological Engineering Department Head.

This Assistant Professor of Practice position is with the Oregon State University's Division of Extension and Engagement. This is a dynamic and innovative position that will span boundaries to lead Extension Service efforts at the intersection of technology and natural resources for forest landowners and farmers across Oregon, and is a joint effort between the College of Agricultural Sciences' Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources Program (50%) and the College of Forestry's Extension Forestry and Natural Resources Program (50%). The academic home for this position will be the Department of Biological & Ecological Engineering in the College of Agricultural Sciences.

This academic faculty member reports to the Program Leaders of Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources and the Forestry and Natural Resources. Decisions regarding this position are made collaboratively with the supervisory team, which includes the Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources Program Leader; Extension Forestry and Natural Resources Program Leader; and the Biological & Ecological Engineering Department Head, Active contributions to scholarship are required (refer to the scholarship section below for details).

This position will have responsibility for needs assessment, development, delivery, and evaluation of Extension non-credit program and educational material; and for conducting applied research to support Extension activities. This academic faculty member will focus on harnessing the potential of natural resources technologies including Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance sustainability, resilience, and productivity in the natural resources arena. This individual will work to help synthesize the application of new technologies in a way that other Extension academic, staff, and professional faculty from both colleges can integrate in their daily program offerings to the stakeholders in Oregon.

This academic faculty member will teach, collaborate with Extension academic and professional faculty, partners/stakeholders, and disseminate findings to advance industries reliant on agriculture and forestry; and will focus on any of a broad range of topics associated with the use of emerging technologies, including AI, to promote sustainable natural resource management.

This position is responsible for designing, developing, maintaining and/or carrying out educational programs and outreach activities to serve broad and diverse populations in an accessible and inclusive manner. This includes complying with civil rights and language/visual access regulations. This position operates within the College of Agricultural Sciences (CAS) and is expected to align with and advance the CAS CARE framework, which articulates commitments to community, access, respect, and equity in all aspects of teaching, scholarship, and engagement. The incumbent will integrate these principles into program design, delivery, partnerships, and workplace interactions.

The E&E division has built the capacity and expectation for employees to use digital communications and technologies in the modern-day workplace. This reflects our demonstrable commitment to using digital communications tools and changing technologies as a primary way to raise Oregonian's awareness of and engagement with our organization, programs and resources.

About Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR) Program:

The Division of Extension and Engagement's Extension ANR Program aims to promote improvements in the economic, environmental and social well-being of Oregon residents. The ANR program serves broad and diverse audiences in Oregon communities having specialized interests by delivering information through academic and professional faculty who have a presence in 36 county offices, 11 branch agricultural experiment stations at 14 locations, and who represent 11 academic departments at OSU.

Key Responsibilities

This position is a joint effort between the College of Agricultural Sciences' Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources Program (50%) and the College of Forestry's Extension Forestry and Natural Resources Program (50%).

75% - Extension programming

a) Extension teaching

  • Utilize Oregon State University's Quality Teaching Framework - which emphasizes inclusivity (audience consideration), evidence-based teaching practices (planning, engagement, teaching, assessment), and learner mentorship (reflection and learner support) - to deliver high-quality, non-credit educational experiences for both internal and external Extension audiences.
  • Conduct on-going needs-assessment activities to determine the educational needs specific to this position's broad and diverse audiences.
  • Following a prioritized needs assessment, develop, facilitate, and implement a comprehensive non-credit educational program and material as well as support for the responsibilities of this position.
  • Discover, co-develop, and engage with internal audiences and external stakeholders, including OSU Extension employees, landowners, producers, growers, and woodland owners, in the application of 21st-century technology optimization, providing reasonable accommodations as needed.
  • Co-develop and deliver non-credit educational programs (primarily to OSU Extension employees), workshops, and training sessions with an emphasis to enhancing and growing 21st-century technology utilization.
  • Utilize innovative teaching methods to engage with multiple audiences, helping to translate emerging technologies to encourage adoption by end users. Ensure that the technologies are accessible and/or develop accessible platforms that would reach a wider audience of natural resources practitioners.
  • Provide the necessary technical assistance and guidance to internal audiences to translate technology to industry and private practitioners.
  • Seek technologies that help to achieve the OSU Strategic Plan (Prosperity Widely Shared) and the two colleges' strategic plans for multiple audiences, focusing on external engagement and outreach.
  • Design culturally inclusive and socially cognizant materials for Extension non-credit programs that can be offered centrally or online to maximize audience participation across the state.
  • Design or adapt a clear evaluation protocols to evaluate and to report Extension program impacts locally, statewide, regionally and/or nationally.
  • Develop and maintain efficient methods for addressing high volumes of topically repetitive audience inquiries regarding the responsibilities of this position. These methods should include scholarly outputs like Extension publications, videos, and other digital communications and engagement tools and strategies. Develop information for access by audiences with different communication styles and expectations.
  • Extension teaching may also involve providing one-on-one consultation and educational programs to intended audiences both internally and externally.
  • Participate in Ask-Extension program.
  • Engage and contribute to opportunities to enhance access, inclusion, and relevant best practices and include these activities in the annual plan of work, impact statements, summary of accomplishments/achievements, and promotion dossiers.
  • Create accessible and inclusive environments that make space for a range of learner needs and provide reasonable accommodations.
  • Solicit peer teaching evaluations (PTEs) and community evaluations of teaching (eCETs) as per OSU Extension standards.
  • Travel/driving is required to access and engage partners/stakeholders throughout the state of Oregon.

b) Partnerships/collaboration/networking

  • Collaborate with other OSU colleges (e.g., colleges of Science and Engineering) to strengthen Extension-based technologies that translate to field conditions on natural resources.
  • Engage with community members, Extension academic and professional faculty, and industry leaders to identify needs and opportunities for technology applications in agriculture, forestry, and other natural resources areas.
  • Serve as a liaison between OSU and industry technology partners to identify platforms that facilitate knowledge exchange and resource sharing.
  • In partnership with OSU Extension Service, College of Agricultural Sciences and College of Forestry Information and Technology (IT) teams coordinate and lead an Extension Artificial Intelligence (AI) natural resources advisory group with a broad and diverse client base that includes internal and external partners. AI technology use and transfer is a core component of this position.
  • Collaborate with OSU employees, students, and industry partners to test appropriate technologies in the field and share results with Extension academic and professional faculty.
  • Contribute to the development of educational materials, outreach publications, and digital resources to disseminate knowledge to broad and diverse natural resources audiences.
  • Attend training opportunities to build basic knowledge and consistent skills to use digital communications, marketing and engagement technologies relevant to position duties.
  • In collaboration with other partners as needed, develop and host an annual natural resources technology conference or meeting to showcase current technologies applicable to stakeholders.

c) Accountability

  • Develop annual plans of work that address educational needs as well as evaluate the quality and impact of Extension educational and applied technology program materials and digital communications.
  • Establish metrics and evaluation criteria to assess the impact of technology on natural resources educational programs and initiatives and share that with Extension employees.
  • Prepare and submit timely reports that highlight program outcomes, successes, and areas for improvement, including plans of work, narrative reports, impact statements, statistical reports, and reports of accomplishments.
  • Contribute actively to Extension, department, and the colleges' assessment and strategic planning efforts around technology.
  • Attend training opportunities to build basic knowledge and consistent skills to use digital communications, marketing, and engagement technologies relevant to position duties.
  • Follow OSU and E&E division brand guidelines, digital publishing standards and digital contact management data integrity practices for programmatic communications, marketing and engagement.
  • Complete the university's required training courses and the E&E division's civil rights training session(s).
  • Report appropriate civil rights data from educational programming and outreach activities into the E&E division's reporting system for the internal civil rights review.
  • Actively contributes to and upholds a workplace culture that is respectful, inclusive, safe, and collegial, fostering open and constructive communication and mutual respect in all interactions.

10% - Scholarship

Assigned duties for this position are expected to result in scholarly outcomes. Refer to the Division of Academic Affairs Promotion Guidelines for Professor of Practice Appointments and Promotion.

Promotion to the rank of Associate Professor of Practice is based on evidence of the candidate's:

  • High level of effectiveness in teaching and education including formal and informal community-based or-engaged instruction, advising, and other assigned duties;
  • Achievement in scholarship and creative activity that contributes to the body of knowledge or its application and dissemination in the candidate's field(s) of expertise;
  • Appropriate level and balance of institutional, community, and professional service.

The criteria for Teaching, Advising, and Other Assignments provides guidelines for documenting and evaluating achievement in these areas.

10% - Applied research

  • Conduct appropriate applied research activities that support Extension programming to develop or confirm technological management practices in areas of specific for both internal and external audiences.
  • Evaluate and document applied research and Extension impacts of programs and communicate the results to identified audiences.
  • Communicate applied research progress and outcomes to relevant audiences using peer reviewed publications, professional meetings, group presentations, Extension events and other digital communication and engagement tools and systems.
  • Design or adapt a clear evaluation protocol to evaluate and report applied research program impacts.
  • Individually and as part of teams, secure outside grants, and contracts and/or service fees to support and enhance position-appropriate educational and applied research programs and service activities. This academic faculty member will be expected to meet all reporting requirements of the funding sources, department, college, and university.
  • Keep abreast of, and interpret scientific, technological and industry developments and trends at state, regional, national, and international levels.

5% - Service

  • Be actively involved in regional and statewide Extension programs that promote engagement with communities across the state.
  • Serve on College, Departmental, and/or Extension committees.
  • Serve on local, state, regional, and national advisory committees, and task forces, as appropriate to position responsibilities.
  • Maintain active membership and involvement in technological professional organizations.
  • Provide mentorship for newer faculty and students where applicable.
  • Assist in cohesive marketing of Extension locally, regionally, and statewide.

What You Will Need

  • Master of Science degree in a natural resources or biological engineering field or another discipline that addresses the duties of the position. Degree must be completed by application date.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of demonstrated experience providing significant technology related services including: teaching, support, design, or educational program delivery.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the application of emerging technologies (some possible examples: broadband, VR/AR, wearable technologies, robotics, drones, precision ag, web/mobile apps, AI, etc.) in natural resource management area.
  • Record of delivering and adoption of non-formal (non-credit) educational programs to broad and diverse audiences, or transferable skills demonstrating potential to deliver such programming.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, enabling communication of highly complex, unfamiliar concepts to broad and diverse audiences.
  • A commitment to collaborative and respectful learning and working environments that are safe, inclusive, and welcoming.
  • Ability to work as a team member with other professionals.
