The Department of Curriculum and Instruction is hiring an assistant professor of practice of English Language Arts/Reading. This position will be headquartered at the San Marcos campus. This position is 100% FTE teaching English Language Arts/Reading courses (on campus) and related courses for the Department of Curriculum and Instruction.

Primary duties related to the position will be to teach sections of corequisite developmental literacy courses. These include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Teach integrated reading and writing courses.
  • Apply culturally sustaining literacy practices that support the academic literacy development of the range of incoming college students in Texas.
  • Develop and apply an assets-based pedagogy drawing from local communities' funds of knowledge.
  • Design instruction and assessment drawing from the literacy and language practices of students from across Texas.
  • Utilize theoretically sound and research-based practices to support students' academic literacy development.
  • Incorporate principles of self-regulated learning to students' strategic reading and writing practices.
  • Facilitate program development and continuous improvement.
  • Develop and implement activities to enhance the ELAR faculty community of practice.
  • Mentor contingent faculty and doctoral teaching assistants in ELAR pedagogy and curriculum;
  • Collaborate with relevant college and department programs and staff in supporting student success.
  • Other duties as assigned.

This is a 100% FTE 9-month appointment. For these duties, the position reports to the English Language Arts/Reading Coordinator and the Curriculum and Instruction department chair. All positions are subject to availability of funds.

Required Qualifications

  • An earned doctorate in developmental literacy, reading or a closely related field at time of application.
  • Minimum 3-years of experience teaching ELAR classes in open-access two-year and four-year developmental education contexts.
  • In-depth understanding of culturally sustaining models of developmental literacy practice, theory, and research.
  • Evidence of asset-based quality teaching of students in undergraduate courses.
  • Experience mentoring new faculty and doctoral teaching assistants.
  • Experience leading faculty development related to integrated reading and writing pedagogical approaches, curriculum development, and assessment.
  • Engagement in scholarship through professional presentations, performances, publications, or similar contributions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Documented, successful experience teaching postsecondary developmental literacy classes.
  • Demonstration of leadership in relevant professional or community organizations.
  • Experience collaborating with first-year composition faculty through a corequisite model of instruction.
