Augusta Universitys Department of English and World Languages is seeking to fill a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of English specializing in composition studies who will also serve as the Director of College Composition, beginning in August 2027. The successful candidate reports directly to the department chair and will lead the universitys College Composition program, with primary responsibility for curriculum development and assessment and the mentorship of departmental faculty in the teaching of first-year writing. The candidate will be responsible for working with English faculty to develop guidance, policies, and strategies for teaching first-year writing in the age of GenAI. They will also contribute to the departments Professional Writing and Rhetoric track of the English BA, including curriculum development and assessment.

To be considered for this position, candidates must demonstrate evidence of promising research and effective teaching. Once hired the candidate will be expected to maintain an active research agenda and publish consistently on writing program administration and/or first-year writing pedagogy. In the classroom, the candidate will teach at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum, including freshman composition, while also supporting students beyond the classroom. In addition to teaching and research, the candidate will serve as an active presence on campus, working successfully with campus partners to lead and promote the visibility of our departments events and programs. Finally, the candidate will be dedicated to mentoring faculty colleagues in the teaching of writing and fostering a collaborative, collegial departmental environment.

Responsibilities

• Administer the universitys College Composition program, including oversight of curriculum, policy, and assessment. The director will also mentor English faculty in the teaching of first-year writing, including conducting peer observations of teaching, developing teaching resources, and cultivating a program culture that emphasizes open dialogue about teaching and resource sharing.
• Fulfill all primary duties and contracted expectations in teaching, research, and service. Augusta University embraces a tripartite mission of teaching, research/scholarship, and service activities. This position will have allocated effort in Research, Service, and Teaching.
• Teach Composition I and II, upper-level courses in composition theory and praxis, and/or other courses assigned by department chair.
• Maintain regular office hours, advising, grading, and following university policies regarding teaching (e.g., reporting attendance and holding final exams during assigned times).
• Create, update, and submit course syllabi/outlines to the department and university platforms, as required by university and system policies.
• Maintain ambitious scholarly agenda.
• Promote student success by engaging in activities that enhance student learning and position learners to be successful in achieving their short- term and long-term academic, career, and personal growth goals.
• Participate in shared governance of the department, college, and university as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• A PhD in English, with a specialization in composition studies, rhetoric, professional or technical writing, or a closely related field
• At least one year of experience with writing program administration (this can include experience gained as a graduate student)
• Demonstrated success teaching various student populations
• Experience teaching online at the university level
• Evidence of an emerging research agenda in composition/writing studies, professional/technical writing, and/or rhetoric

Assistant Professor- Terminal degree (or nearing its completion), or its equivalent in training, ability, and/or experience.

Required faculty employment qualifications for all USG institutions and all academic ranks within these institutions shall be:

• Consistent with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)s requirements for institutional accreditation;
• Evidence of ability as a teacher;
• Evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned;
• Successful experience (which will necessarily be waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements); and,
• Desirable personal qualities judged on the basis of personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience mentoring faculty in the teaching of writing
• Experience with curriculum development and/or program assessment
• Experience with developing departmental AI policies, guidance, and resources
• Experience advising and mentoring students beyond the classroom
• Experience working with campus partners, including general education committees and student support units (e.g. the writing center)
• Interest in developing WAC/WID programming
• Demonstrated commitment to fostering communities of belonging

Shift/Salary/Benefits

This position is academic year based and typically works August through May, depending on dates outlined in offer letter and yearly contract.

The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0.

Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.

The Department currently offers a BA degree in English with concentrations in Creative Writing, Literature, Professional Writing & Rhetoric, and a Secondary Teacher Certification and Minors in French, German, Spanish, English: Writing, and English: Literature.
