The Assistant Professor of Dental Hygiene is responsible for dental lab, clinic, and classroom instruction of students in the Sheridan College Dental Hygiene Program. This position supports student learning through evidence-based teaching practices, clinical supervision, and mentorship while contributing to program assessment, accreditation activities, and the mission of Sheridan College.

Reports To Director of Dental Hygiene Education/Qualifications

  • Graduate of a Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) accredited dental hygiene program.
  • Minimum of two years of clinical experience as a dental hygienist.
  • Bachelors degree required, masters degree preferred. Candidates currently enrolled in a graduate dental hygiene or related program may be considered.
  • Current dental hygiene licensure, or eligibility for licensure in Wyoming, including local anesthesia, nitrous oxide/oxygen administration and laser permit.
  • Current immunizations and Healthcare Provider CPR Certification.
  • Member of the American Dental Hygienists Association.

Supervisory and Management Responsibility:

  • Provide academic advising for assigned dental hygiene students.
  • Provide clinical supervision and oversight of dental hygiene students during patient care.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in clinical, laboratory, and classroom environments.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and utilize dental instruments and equipment while supervising students providing patient care.

Job Duties

These are the job duties for required of the position.

Percentage of time 75 Responsibility/Duty

Teach in the clinic, lab, and classroom:

  • Plan, develop, and deliver classroom, laboratory, and clinical instruction that integrates didactic knowledge with clinical practice using a variety of teaching methods.
  • Ensure instructional content is evidence-based and consistent with current standards of care.
  • Evaluate student performance, provide timely feedback, and maintain accurate records of student progress and clinical competencies.
  • Participate in student evaluation and progression decisions and continually assess and improve the teaching process.

Percentage of time 12.5 Responsibility/Duty

Advise dental hygiene students:

  • Meet with assigned advisees throughout the semester.
  • Communicate student progress, concerns, and achievements with dental hygiene faculty and the program director as appropriate.
  • Maintain offices hours per week as defined by the institution.

Percentage of time 5 Responsibility/Duty

Participate and contribute as a member of the dental hygiene faculty team:

  • Recommend resources, materials, and equipment for use in the program.
  • Assist in planning, implementing, evaluating and revising students learning experiences.
  • Attend regularly scheduled department and assigned ad-hoc meetings.
  • Participate in curriculum review, program assessment, and outcomes evaluation.
  • Assist in the dental hygiene accreditation process including documentation, program assessment, and compliance with CODA standards.
  • Assist with recruiting qualified students and faculty.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the director of dental hygiene.

Percentage of time 5 Responsibility/Duty

Participate and contribute as a member of the Sheridan College faculty team:

  • Participate in a college-wide committee.
  • Attend in-services, orientations, and college required activities.
  • Participate in institutional initiatives that support student success and retention.
  • Support college policies, procedures, and institutional mission.

Percentage of time 2.5 Responsibility/Duty

Maintain professional dental hygienist skills and knowledge:

  • Demonstrate commitment to continuous learning, evidenced by such things as critical review of scientific literature, attendance at continuing education and professional meetings, and/or participation in on-line learning activities.
  • Maintain current clinical knowledge consistent with contemporary dental hygiene practice. · Integrate current evidence-based practices into classroom and clinical instruction.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the dental hygiene profession through membership and participation in state, regional, and/or national professional organizations and activities.
  • Maintain an updated Curriculum Vitae (CV) and Biosketch.
