Assistant Professor of Biology (Tenure-Track)

The Division of Behavioral, Natural and Health Sciences at William Jewell College invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track position, at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning August 2026.

We seek a dynamic teacher-scholar capable of teaching courses in various content areas, though preference will be given to those with expertise in cellular & molecular biology and genetics. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching, active student engagement, and the ability to contribute to a vibrant, interdisciplinary liberal arts environment.

Appointment level will be based on an applicant''s scholarly and teaching record and practical experience. Due to the emphasis on instructional duties, all applicants must possess outstanding teaching skills and teach 12 credit hours of regularly scheduled classes per semester.

Preference will be given to applicants with a strong commitment to excellence in teaching; student involvement in research; student mentoring; the ability to teach a range of undergraduate biology courses; and the desire to integrate fully in a critical thinking college. The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the U.S. prior to the start of the position.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Teach up to 24 contact hours per year (i.e., three 4-credit courses per semester)
  • Teach undergraduate courses in biology, which may include Biological Diversity, Cellular & Molecular Biology, Genetics and upper-level courses in these areas or related courses aligned with expertise.
  • Participate in departmental and college service, including student advising and committee work.
  • Engage in professional development and scholarly activity appropriate to a teaching-focused institution.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Biology, Cell Biology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, or a closely related biological discipline (or ABD with completion by August 2026) required.
  • Evidence of effective teaching.
  • Ability to teach across the undergraduate biology curriculum
  • Commitment to mentoring diverse learners and supporting an inclusive educational environment.
  • Ability to engage undergraduate students in research and scholarly activity
  • Ability to develop curriculum and assessment tools
  • Willingness to assume a variety of responsibilities in a small department
